High School Sports in the United States

Interested in playing a high school sport? You should be! They are a great way to make friends, get involved in your school, and stay active.

Participation in high school sports is not required but is a very popular and long tradition in the United States. During the school year, there are three seasons for sports: fall, winter, and spring. Each season lasts approximately 3-4 months. Each sport is divided into three levels based on the player's age or skill: freshmen, JV (Junior Varsity), and Varsity. The freshmen level is reserved for 9th graders entering Beverly High School and may be trying the sport for the first time. JV, or junior varsity, are for players with experience in the sport, which can include freshmen. The varsity level is reserved for the best players as well as students in their senior/last year of high school. Students may be in a different sport for every season but can only join one sport per season.

Attendance to practice and games is mandatory and is held soon after school ends. There may be occasional tournaments on the weekend. Transportation to and from "away" games is provided by a school bus. Families and friends are welcome to come to both home and away games to cheer for our student athletes. Home games are often streamed/recorded by Beverly's local station, BevCam.

Sports at Beverly High School

Beverly High School is a member of the Northeastern Conference and plays games against other teams in the same conference i.e. Danvers, Gloucester, Marblehead, Masconomet Regional, Peabody, Salem, Saugus, Swampscott, and Winthrop High Schools. Salem is a long-standing rival of Beverly's. BHS offers eight fall, six winter, and seven spring sports. BHS has many recent accomplishments in several different sports but has a strong history in Boy's ice hockey and football. Click below to find information on each sport offered at BHS!

Registration Information

There are many things to prepare before you can start your first day of practice, often months in advance. Information about upcoming sports should be in you student email account or there may be posters in hallways. Potential athletes must create an account, sign up, attend every try out (like an audition), pay any fees (or have the fees waived if the universal application is filled out and approved), and make sure their yearly physical checkup is up-to-date. If you are worried you may have missed the deadline, please contact the coach or one of your teachers and we can help you. If you are ready to sign up, please follow the directions and complete each section below.
