KIRK PARK FIELD TRIP

Teachers organize their own activities for this outing. Kristy Johnson from Army Corps of Engineers may also help facilitate and she will work with you regarding opening up a gate and getting a special events permit that you will need prior to your trip. (541-942-5631)
MT. PISGAH, HABITAT HUNT

Time: Approximately 2-2 1/2 hours
Students investigate a variety of organisms, where they live and what they need to survive. Emphasis on the concept of a “habitat”. This tour develops the awareness and appreciation of the amazing diversity of life around us.
MT.PISGAH-WET-N-WILD

Time: 4-5 hours if both sessions are attended
Through discussion and hands-on activities along the trails, students explore water as it enters the Arboretum as a raindrop, flows into the pond, the streams, the river and the soil and completes its cyclic journey to the sea and back. This is a 2 hour tour. It can be followed by an activity session that provides hands-on projects and activities that parallel what the students have learned, also two hours. Admission and bus transportation will be paid for.

This trip will be scheduled with EWEB’s Tours and Presentations line listed above. More information is given when you call and someone will help to organize your trip time and date. How Eugene’s water is taken from the McKenzie River, filtered, purified and delivered to the consumer is covered. You will also be able to view a fish counting station.
GLENWOOD RECYCLING CENTER

Megan Warner (educator@bringrecycling.org) is the person to contact. The first part of this trip is a tour of the Glenwood Central Receiving Station. Opportunities to recycle are shown to kids and they also take a look at how materials are bailed. This segment takes about 45 minutes. Then, students are bussed to Short Mountain where they look at the huge landfill. (35 min.) Finally, the class finishes up at Bring Recycling where different ways of re-using things and what types of things can be recycled are discussed. (20 min) Reduce, reuse, recycle is clearly the focus of the is trip. Bus transportation will be paid for.

Critter Quest Walks(1st-5th graders) – On these morning field trips, kids will spend half of their time using pond dipping nets to look for aquatic critters and half of their time on a wildlife-themed nature walk. Life cycles, adaptations, and camouflage are some of the topics that will be addressed.
River Quest Walks(1st-5th graders) – On these morning water-themed walks, kids will visit the Willamette River to see the water cycle in action, learn about local watersheds, and check out riparian plants and animals. They will also learn about the relationship between people and rivers. (Note with River Quest walks, there is also an optional Afternoon Adventures program where your students are split into larger groups and spend two hours enjoying pond study — kids use dip nets themselves — and Earth Art.)
