Desired Behavior:

Appropriate Social Interaction with Peers

Observed Behavior: Inappropriate Social Interaction With Peers

Listening skills: Demonstrate how to listen while others are speaking: stop what you're doing, look at the person who is speaking, keep your hands free of distracting materials.

Active listening skills: Demonstrate active listening skills while others are speaking: listen to what the other person is saying and respond by asking questions or adding additional comments.

Peer partner: Assign a peer with strong communication skills to encourage students and have students observe and model these behaviors.

Reduce competition: Limit the focus on competition in the classroom. Competition can cause students to lose focus or not listen to others.

Student repetition: Ask students to repeat, rephrase, or summarize what they heard in order to determine what they heard and if they need clarification.

One-on-one conversations: Limit student conversations to one-on-one to practice listening skills and attention. Ensure students are sitting or standing in a way that promotes eye contact and listening. After students are successful, gradually include more students in the conversation.
