Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Common Core Standard(s): 1.OA.6, 2.OA.2, 3.OA.7
Instructional Skill/Concept: Basic Fact Recall and Fluency
Diagnostic Task- District Grade level timed facts benchmark assessments (if BM not met, review above “Understanding Number Concepts” rows)
Intervention Protocol/ Direct Instruction Recommendations:
Administer a basic fact assessment (between 20-30 facts) with student or students in a small group .
While students are working, closely monitor their thinking, strategies, mis conceptions, recall and trends of difficulty.
When students are complete ask them to share their thinking around a few facts that were difficult for them to solve.
Take notice of their thinking…
Are they counting all?
Are they counting on?
Are they using what they know?
Are they using a start with fact?
Do they have confidence to attack a fact they don’t know?
Develop a intervention plan based on groups of related facts with specific strategies (for example: addition/subtraction combinations of 10, near doubles, +1, +2 multiplication/division: multiplying by 10, by 9, by 5)
Administer diagnostic tasks for partitioning to probe further.
