• The teaching of the association between the sounds of a language and the written symbols

Sound/ Symbol Framework K-5 Exemplar:

• Teacher provides direct instruction in explicit, specific sound symbol relation (individual letter or combination letter sounds)

• Teacher models sound

• Teacher models letter representation of sound with visual link to alphabet

• Student produces sound

• Student participates in interactive word work with sound and letter representation in words and/or text

• Students have opportunities to form letters

• Teacher assesses student’s mastery through observation
