☐ Make digital and/or physical copies of all important documents
☐ Make an “Emergency Card” to carry in your wallet or purse
☐ Register with the U.S. Department of State's STEP Traveler program
☐ Talk to your advisor about registration for the next semester
Before you depart for study abroad, talk with your academic advisor at Bethel about the courses you will want and need to enroll in for your return semester at Bethel. Try to get all this sorted out before you leave. During your time abroad, you will receive information on how to register for classes from your study abroad site, but this will be much easier if you have the discussion before you go!
☐ Review notes from your visit with a health professional to complete your Health Information Form, get immunizations, and get medications for travel
☐ Discuss communication with your family and friends
Make sure you have decided how and how often you plan to contact your family, as well as who will initiate communication.
Be sure to have read the sections on cell phones to arrange an international plan or SIM/eSIM.
If you'd like your parents, your spouse, or others to be able to talk to Bethel access your student records, you must also give Bethel permission by providing a release of information.
Give a copy of your itinerary to a trusted friend or family member.
☐ Make sure you have a way to pay abroad
Notify bank/credit card company of travel (if necessary)
Have at least 2 forms of payment
Know how you’ll access cash on arrival
Have a small amount of local currency (if needed)

☐ Start journaling your experience before you go
Know about your host country; know at least a few phrases in your host culture’s language; know where on the map you’ll be going and make sure you’ve read as much as you can about the culture and people you’ll be spending time with.
