☐ Make photocopies of all important documents
Include an emergency contact in your host country (name, phone number, address) AND an emergency contact in the U.S. (name, phone number, address). The emergency contact might be the international student advisor at the host institution, a trusted roommate, or your host family.
☐ Talk to your advisor about registration for the next semester
Before you depart for study abroad, talk with your academic advisor at Bethel about the courses you will want and need to enroll in for your return semester at Bethel. Try to get all this sorted out before you leave. During your time abroad you will receive information on how to register for classes from your study abroad site, but this will be much easier if you have had the discussion before you go!
☐ Visit with a health professional to complete your Health Information Form, get immunizations, and get medications for travel
Make sure you have decided how and how often you plan to contact your family, as well as who will initiate communication. Also, be sure to have read the sections on cell phones and other types of communication, and if you decide to use a cell phone overseas, get as much as possible arranged before leaving.
☐ Make sure you have a way to pay
Don’t wait until you arrive abroad to start recording your experience – see the section on documenting your experience.
Know about your host country; know at least a few phrases in your host culture’s language; know where on the map you’ll be going and make sure you’ve read as much as you can about the culture and people you’ll be spending time with.
☐ Once you arrive on-site:
Send an email to study-abroad@bethel.edu with your contact information (address and phone number) in the host country.
