PASO : An Introduction to the Pilipinx Community
The Pilipinx Academic Student Orientation (PASO) is an event hosted by Pilipinx Academic Student Services (PASS) at UC Berkeley. Its purpose is to welcome incoming Pilipinx and Pilipinx American students to the university, providing them with an introduction to campus resources, community networks, and cultural organizations. PASO aims to foster a sense of belonging and support for new students as they transition into university life.
This is a great way to be introduced and connect from the Pilipinx community!
Paglipat Initiative
The Paglipat Initiative at UC Berkeley is a program designed to support Pilipinx transfer students as they transition into the university. The initiative offers personalized assistance and resources tailored to the unique needs of these students, aiming to foster a sense of community and belonging. By participating in Paglipat, students can connect with peers, access mentorship opportunities, and engage in activities that promote academic success and cultural affirmation. This initiative reflects UC Berkeley's commitment to inclusivity and the success of its diverse student body.
History of PASS!
Student leaders founded PASS as a result of the removal of Pilipinx students from our status as a Student Affirmative Action (SAA) group in 1985. Since then, PASS has worked to fulfill our role as a student-initiated, student-run, and student-labored recruitment and retention center at UC Berkeley. A founding member of the bridges Coalition in 1996 in response to the passage of Proposition 209, PASS affirms our commitment to serving underrepresented students of color, especially Filipino/Filipino American students.
Our organization has existed for 40 years, which means undergraduate student leaders since 1985 have worked to create the resources we enjoy today. Four decades means a variety of changes our organization has gone through, but we remain grounded in our mission of liberation from institutional challenges and creating spaces of empowerment for our communities to thrive.
As An Intern : What Has PASS Done For You?
Jhoana : OMG!! So much love for my T-REC component. They are so passionate about transfers and being representatives to our Pil Transfer community both in and out of Berkeley. We not only get to bond from our love in our culture but as well as our commitment to other transfer students! I met so many ambitious and creative people in T-REC who always show up for one another, especially Giles!! We <3 Giles :’)
Rhianna: Without PASS, I would probably not be at Cal. And even if I were, I would most likely be super lonely. I’ll never fail to mention that my experience attending Transfer Weekend with PASS gave me an incredible community and friends that I am now super close to! Beyond that, I love the work that PASS does in bridging the gaps between disadvantaged Pilipinx students and higher education.
