The 8 Species of Pangolin

There are eight species of pangolin:

• Sunda pangolin: Manis javanica

One of the two most endangered pangolin species

• Philippine Pangolin or Palawan Pangolin: Manis culionensis

This pangolin has the most scales along its back

• Chinese Pangolin: Manis pentadactyla

This pangolin lives in higher and colder elevations

• Ground Pangolin, also known as Temminck's Pangolin or Cape Pangolin: Smutsia temminckii

The largest pangolin ever was one of these at 33 kilos!

• Tree Pangolin, or White-Bellied Pangolin: Manis tricuspis

During the day tree pangolins hide in trees

• Long-Tailed or African Black-bellied Pangolin: Manis tetradactyla

These are the smallest pangolins

• Giant Pangolin: Manis gigantea

Usually these are the biggest

• Indian, or Thick-Tailed Pangolin: Manis crassicaudata

These pangolins have been known to wander into villages
