Independent Study for PE Grade 12
An Independent Study in Physical Education (ISPE) allows a student to broaden the curriculum through advanced study or participate in activities not available in the Belmont High School physical education program. It affords students the opportunity to extend physical education learning activities beyond regular school hours. ISPE is an instructional strategy for delivering standards-based, grade level content, not an alternative curriculum, and is expected to be equal in quality to classroom instruction. An ISPE is a structured program consistently taught by a qualified individual(s) who will be responsible for supervising and verifying student participation. An ISPE could involve a sport in which the student has become highly competitive at a national, state, regional, or local level or provides an opportunity for a physical activity that is not offered in the current physical education curriculum such as martial arts or gymnastics.
ISPE activities may not replicate the existing curriculum at Belmont High School. Working out at a gym or taking studio classes would not qualify, as these activities are a part of the current BHS PE curriculum. ISPE is available to students in grade 12 only, and must engage participants for at least 30 hours over 12 consecutive weeks, meeting for at least 2 days a week. The coach or sports administrator is responsible for supervising and monitoring all ISPE activities and working together with the student to ensure that the requirements of the ISPE are fulfilled. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all ISPE deadlines are met in order to receive their credit for Physical Education.
