The most important activity you can do with your child is reading on a daily basis. By Second Grade your child should be reading to you everyday and you should also continue reading books to or with your child. It is wonderful for you child to hear you read and know that you value reading. Also, rereading books has great value. Your child will realize that when they reread a book several times that the book will seem easier to read and this will help their fluency. When a child becomes a more fluent reader, this helps their confidence while reading and also will lead to better comprehension skills while reading. Please be sure to use the wonderful websites Raz-Kids and Reaidng A-Z to get leveled books to read with your child. Also go to Story Online for your child to listen to their favorite books being read.

After reading a book, have your child write about their favorite part of the story. Have them write a least two sentences about the story. Please make sure they are writing in complete sentences and using capitals and punctuation when writing. After they have written their sentences, have them illustrate their story.

Have your child practice their high frequency words on our Mrs. Perkins website. You can get copies of all the Dolch High Frequency Word Lists, sight word cards, and your child can practice their sight words by audio and visual modes on this website.

Any writing practice you can have your child do will be beneficial. You can have them keep a daily journal and write about the fun activities they are doing each day ( these are also good reading practice when they go back and reread them), write a letter to a grandmother, grandfather, or a friend ( a teacher would also appreciate notes written to them), have them write an email if they enjoy using the computer ( of course with supervision), and have them make lists of things that they would enjoy doing each day.

Have your child practice spelling and writing words. By second grade you child should spelling words with long vowel sounds. They should be able to write words with the silent 'e' and understand that the vowel in the middle is long. Also have your child practice writing word with other letter patterns that make the long vowel sounds. (Ex.- ay/ ai make the long 'a' sound as in day/may/ play with the (ay) and wait/bait/main with the (ai).
