Activities

Please see individual grade level activities for ideas to help you child with reading.

Use magnetic letters and a metal baking sheet to create these ABC learning activities:

1. Place the letters in order but leave out every third letter and then have your child go back and fill in the missing letters. While they are sequencing the letters, they may need to go back to the beginning to recite the letters in order to find the next letter that is missing. Always have your child point to and recite the entire alphabet when finished.

2. Say a word and ask your child to select the letter that they hear at the beginning of the word. (Ex.- Find the letter that you hear at the beginning of - dog.

3. Use upper and lower case letters and have your child match the upper and lower case letters for each letter in the alphabet. (Ex. Aa)

4. Say three letter words (CVC words) and have you child pick out the letters to spell the words. Say the words slowly so your child can hear each individual sound ( ex. C-A-T) and then have your child blend the sounds together and say the word. You could also have your child draw a picture for each word they spell to make the activity more fun.

5. Use the letters to create a rainbow shape. Again leave some letters out and have your child fill in the missing letters. Then have your child go back and sing the ABC song and touch each letter as they sing the song.

6. Take your magnetic letters and play a game by dividing the letters in half. Give your child half of the letters and give yourself have of the letters. Have your child say the alphabet while each of you locate the letters and sequence them in the correct order. Have you child touch each letter and recite the alphabet to check and see if the letters are in the correct order.
