Please note that an absence from school of up to 1 day can only be granted by the Housemaster (requests for longer absences must go the Headmaster). If your son is absent from school, please email or telephone us before 8.15am.
Parents and guardians should note that all students are expected to be present at the start and end of all school terms. Please consult the school term dates on the parent portal to clarify when these dates are. In exceptional circumstances students may be permitted to leave for long haul destinations on the morning of the last day of term. All boarding houses open at 6pm on the day before term starts and one house is always available from 11am for any early arrivers.
Parents should notify the House Staff in advance should they wish to visit the House (other than at the beginning and ends of each term). Parents will be asked to sign in and out. Please be aware that Stud has bedrooms off a central atrium. Parents are requested not to go to bedrooms without notifying staff members first.
The house has two alarms; the intruder alarm is set every evening and unset in the morning. Entry to the house between these times will set the alarm off. The fire alarm is linked to the windows in the atrium so that, in the event of a fire, the smoke does not accumulate in the house. We do regular fire drills and the boys should assume that any fire alarm that they hear is real!
Stud students are welcome to bring mini speakers for their rooms, but powerful music systems are not really appropriate. Excessive noise or playing during Prep time or lights out will lead to confiscation.
Televisions and games consoles are not allowed but laptops are encouraged. They should be used primarily for educational purposes. All equipment needs to be electrically checked and indelibly marked with the owner’s name. I would caution against allowing your child to bring anything particularly valuable or irreplaceable items to school. All pupils have a lockable area within their bedroom, which is a good place to store valuables.
All areas of the House are cleaned regularly and students are encouraged to keep their rooms tidy.
Laundry is done in House and we would ask that students do not bring an excessive amount of clothing, as although wardrobes and cupboards are available, space is limited. Please ensure that all home clothes are clearly labelled as is uniform. All clothing should be suitable to tumble dry as again space is limited.
There is an obvious danger in keeping money around the House and, as such, we do not recommend the boys have cash. The tuck shop and the village shop both take cash cards. Shopping trips to Hailsham and Eastbourne are available on the weekend.
Please be aware of bedtimes for the House and that mobile phone calls should not take place after these times. First Year and Lower 5th Students do not keep their phones or any other electronic devices with them overnight.
All students are allocated a school email address, which is accessible to them throughout the day (and outside of school). During lessons, social networking and personal email sites should not be used. We encourage students to use their school email where possible.
The House is serviced by a WIFI network and students may freely connect to the services offered by the school up to 23:00. Independent devices which allow connectivity should not be used be-yond this time, it is important for students to get adequate rest.
For further information on the School’s e-safety policy please check the website or if you need to contact the School’s e-safety co-ordinator, Chris Betts, please feel free to email him:
When you first get to Stud, you will need to log into a school computer before being allowed access to the Wi-Fi on your personal technology. You can then change the assigned password to one of your choosing and access the system. The network is protected by a firewall called Smoothwall which filters out unacceptable content.
Students need to limit the amount of luggage they bring into the boarding house as our ‘trunk room’ storage is limited and we can only store two pieces of luggage and one standard box each. Therefore, your son really needs to consider what items are necessary and what they could live without. If more items than those stated above arrive at the boarding house, then we will have to send things back home at your own expense. Thank you very much for your co-operation and understanding with this.
All junior students’ passports should be handed into Mr Jones or Mr Potter for safe keeping (6th form students have the option of handing theirs in or keeping them locked away in their own rooms).
Parents are not always formally invited to attend plays, concerts and matches etc. but are welcome to attend. Events are listed in the school calendar and for seated productions, you are advised to book in advance via the booking system on the website (www.bedes.org). Mr Jones sends out regular emails to keep parents and guardians informed of the events in the House, and the Stud Facebook page (Stud House @Bedesschool or www.facebook.com/bedesschool) and Twitter account (@StudBedes) are regularly updated.
During the School holidays, Stud House is completely closed. The dates and times of the term dates are published well in advance in order to allow you to make appropriate arrangements for your son’s travel safely to and from School. Please do not book an early leave at the end of term without the permission from the Housemaster or Headmaster. All travel arrangements should be made through the travel co-coordinator: email:
travel.coordinator@bedes.org.
The School does not give permission for boarders to go out of School on week nights unless they are on an official School trip or staying with their own family.
Entirely student-led, at the first stage individual councils represent the views of students in every day and boarding house in weekly House Council meetings. The House Councils ensure that the voice of every student in every year group is heard. Beyond the House Councils, the four School Council sub-committees focus on Academic, Pastoral, Co-Curricular and Social issues.
The work of the sub-committees has led to new Student Travel plans and bus routes, changes in teacher assessment and curriculum structure and improved provision in a range of student support issues - from UCAS applications and work experience to building developments and advancements in IT infrastructure.
Lastly, the Senior School Council, chaired by the Head of School, sees issues dealt with at every level. Minutes for these meetings are then published to all students and staff.
At Bede's, we want all of our pupils to express their views, ask questions and challenge conventional wisdoms.
A representative from the House of each year group is nominated each term to join the House Council.
Stud House have been supporting the ABC Fund for the last 7 years.
The abcfund was set up in 1991, to offer enjoyable
opportunities to children, young people and their carers, particularly those with disabilities or special needs.
Throughout this time, Stud House has been raising money for the abcfund in events such as Race Night, Stud Musical Soiree, Casino night, Cheese and Wine night, and a 5-a-side football competition. Our total over the last 7 years stands at over £12,000 and we hope that we will add to this in the years to come.
The safety of your son is extremely important to us and I would draw your attention to the School’s Safeguarding Policy which can be found on the School’s website.
It is a requirement that all students must sign out from the House and sign in at their destination, then upon their return they are required to enter the time of their return. This enables House staff to know who is out in the event of an emergency. Students are also required to sign out from the House when leaving the school grounds.
Submitting an application to leave the House at the weekends needs to go directly to the Housemaster well in advance of the date in mind (at least the preceding Wednesday). An email is preferable. Please make sure that if your child is granted leave after Friday school that they do not have any other weekend school commitments. If your child is staying with a friend, the Housemaster will need permission from both sets of parents. All weekend arrangements (and activity choices) are collected on the previous Monday by Mr Potter.
