Practice Schedule & Expectations

The regular season practice schedule begins the second Monday after Labor Day. All team members attend the All Team Meeting on Mondays from 3:15 to 6:00 pm. The meeting consists of both administrative information and practices. 

In addition to the Monday meeting, each event operates uniquely:

Debate

Debate practices as a team on Mondays and additionally once to twice a week.  The days for debate practice will be decided at the beginning of the year for what works for most debaters. 

Speech

New students are expected to practice 30 minutes to 1 hour a week with a peer captain. The specific time and day can vary depending on the availability of the event captain and the student, however, students whose schedules do not have any flexibility to meet with a coach or captain during the week between 3:00pm and 6:00pm Tuesday through Thursday should reconsider joining this activity.  Returning students also practice 30-1 hr but more likely with a coach than a captain.

All Events

Coaching sessions are not for doing regular work. They should not be utilized to do individual writing or memorizing with a coach or peer looking over the shoulder. Coaching sessions are for evaluating work done at home so competitors can make sure they are on the right path. 

Do not come to practice with a coach and expect the coach to help you memorize. Coaches can give advice or drills for memorization after the script is finalized but all events require additional work outside of the dedicated coaching time.
