About Us

The BHS Speech and Debate team is a decades-old, award-winning team. 

We are a competitive activity, not an after school club. We meet at BHS during the week but travel October through March around the state (or out of!) to tournaments to compete against other schools. 

At its core, our activity is about communication. There is no other class or opportunity at BHS which focuses on communication and public speaking like our team does (the one semester speech class is great, but a single semester (or up to 4 years!) of competition is better!) 

On paper, joining the team is beneficial for college applications, NHS applications, and general bragging rights. In practice, the benefit of S&D is learning how to communicate clearly, rigorously, and effectively. We teach research techniques, writing methods, and both basic and advanced public speaking skills. 

Students who do the work for the activity, for the rest of their lives, will be one of the best communicators in any room they find themselves in, regardless of profession or situation.
