Message from your Teachers...
Dear Year 6,
It is Mr Knapp and Miss Palmer here! Firstly, we hope you are all keeping well, happy and safe. We have now had our first week of home learning and we have been so impressed at how many of you have been making an attempt to do the lessons that we have been putting up for you. From imaginative Kraken stories and pictures, to peppered moth experiments, to challenging ratio and proportion work, we have been blown away by the quality of the work you have been doing π
Please make sure you look at your work again, once it has been placed in the βMarked Workβ folders, in order to receive your well-earned praise and feedbackπ. Also, we know it is a bit confusing but please try to complete your work in the correct folder (6Pβs are underneath 6Kβs). There is now a Spelling for Sumdog folder in the English at Home folder with lists of the words so you can learn them before completing the Sumdog activity if you wish.
Getting used to this type of schooling is hard for everyone involved: parents, teachers and, above all, you guys, but we will get through these strange times and we look forward to seeing you all again when we can do so safely.
Mr Knapp and Miss Palmer

Listening to music is really important especially during difficult times like lockdown.
Music has been shown to lift our mood, fend off depression, lower levels of stress-related hormones & even ease pain.
After listening carefully to it, write or talk with a friend/family member about a piece of music that you find inspirational.
Make sure you try to explain how it makes you feel & why, and why it's an inspirational piece.
Research and produce a fact-file for a black British artist.
Have a go at copying a piece of their art work or making your own in a similar style.
Suggested artists: Frank Bowling; Chris Ofili; Uzo Egonu; Sonia Boyce; Lubaina Hamid; Lynette Yiadom-Boakye; Ronald Moody; Winston Branch; Keith Piper; Tam Joseph .... someone of your choice

This week we are doing something a bit different for maths. We are solving the highly suspicious murder of some school inspectors with a poisoned chocolate cake! To do that there are 5 maths challenges to complete and by solving each one you will crack a new part of the code. The challenges involve work on shape, multiples challenges, using a calculator and binary numbers (they will be explained). Get solving and see if you can crack the case!
For this week please go to the Year 6 Google Drive and look in the Maths > Week 10 folder and you will find the 5 different challenges numbered in order (they all contain an explaining example of how to crack that code). You will also find a document with the list of suspects in the case and the back story for what happened. Finally, there is a powerpoint which will explain for you what binary numbers are and how they work. Save your answers as normal in the same folder for Mr Knapp and Ms Palmer to see.
Continue to work through the home learning plan for Year 6 as there will be a daily assessment to complete. These topics are meant to be revision and consolidation of topics that we have already covered this year while the White Rose Hub lessons are for new topics. This weeks challenges will focus on different questions to do with shape, area and perimeter.
Log onto Sumdog and then find the assessment where they are usually set. On the schools website there is also the Year 6 Home Learning Plan which shows what topics you will be working one each day (Monday to Friday). We will also be setting a weekly competition on Sumdog so that you can compete in teams to practice your mental maths skills.

Create a fabulously colourful piece of art. Rainforest trees grow tall with their branches forming a dense canopy. Have a go at drawing tree trunk outlines and then decorate them with your own original patterns. Or instead, draw one of your favourite rainforest creatures.
Use felt tips pens or pencils for intricate pattern details. If you don't have pastels and chalks for drawing the animals, try using crayons and paints instead. You don't have to use black paper for the animals.

A massive thank you to all those that rose to the challenge and took part in Beatrix Potter's first virtual sports day.
Judging by the pictures and videos that were sent in, there was lots of fun had, some even wearing their PE kit to make it that little more real.
Now onto the results. It was incredible close fought competition but of course there can be only one winner. The winning team colour for KS2 Beatrix Potter Virtual Sports Day 2020 was...
Hot on their tails in second place were the purple team, closely followed by the yellows in third, in fourth were the greens and last by no means least were the reds.
You'll also see that below we have provided the individual results for each exercise and again some of the results were very close.
A big well done to all those who took part and congratulations to those who came first, second or third in the activities. Please feel free download and print the certificate that applies to you.
Once again, thank you to all those who took part, demonstrating the importance of keeping fit and healthy whilst having fun at the same time. Mr Finch

This is our first lesson on the classification of living things.
Watch the videos on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. Scientists have designed classification systems to help us to understand the millions of species that inhabit our planet.
Task 1. Group the animal pictures found in the Science at home - Week 6 folder. You can cut them out if this makes it easier.
Task 2. Use the questions on branching key to classify each of the animals.
Task 3. Choose a familiar habitat and list the plants and animals which live in it or visit it. Then group them and think of questions to separate them into smaller groups. Use these questions to make your own classification branching key.

We have spent the last two weeks focused on the Thames. Now we are going to look at the main rivers around the rest of the UK. First, look at the lesson Word document for this lesson on the g-drive and watch the two attached videos. Your task is to retell the myth in your own way. You could produce a comic strip, retell it in your own words with an illustration, make a google slides presentation about it or you could summarise it in just 50 words.
We will be doing more on this after May half-term but this is a lovely little lesson to get you started on thinking about some of the changes between primary school and secondary school.
There will be a document in the PSHE section of the Year 6 google drive where you can make a list of the things that you will need to have ready for the school day at secondary school.
This week we are going to be looking at how you can make music by just using sounds that you can find and make yourself around the house. This follows on well from the other two bitesize lessons that we have been doing over the past few weeks. I was amazed at the range of different sounds that could be made from just tearing and folding different bits of paper!
You can record your sounds on any smart phone and then you can edit them on lots of different free apps. I would ask a parent or other adult at home to help you find a good one. Most apple and android phones have built in apps that you can use on them if needs be.

You could also use our Treasure Island work and Ancient Greek myths as a source of inspiration.

Look out your bedroom window and see what you can see. You might have gardens, other houses or flats, a park perhaps and take your time to draw a landscape picture of what you can see. If you would rather paint the landscape you are very welcome to.
Use the attached video link to give you some tips on landscape drawing. Upload a picture of when you work is finished to the Year 6 Google Drive - Art Home Learning Folders for each class as we would love to see your work.
