This week we are going to be thinking all about space! Astrid loves the stars and space. βI want to be an astronaut!β she says. While mama is away, papa and Astrid have fun acting out the challenges an astronaut faces on a space mission β eating food from a tube, doing science experiments, living and sleeping in near-zero gravity. Astrid can do it all! Then itβs time to meet mama at the airbase. But where has mama been?
If you were going to space what would you need to take with you? Write a list of all the objects you would take.
Draw a space suit to include a helmet, gloves, oxygen tanks, boots and a space jacket and trousers.
Explain what a label is β we have a labels on our classroom drawers to say what is in the drawer.
Label your space suit so that everyone knows which parts are which.
Now draw a space rocket to include windows, rocket boosters, fins, cone, ladder, take-off pad.
Label your space rocket so that everyone knows which parts are which.
Today we are going to draw our very own alien.
Think about how many heads, arms, hands, eyes, legs, tails it has.
What colour will it be?
Will it have antennae?
Draw your alien! Now describe your alien.
Imagine where your alien lives, what it eats, how it moves, and what language it speaks and what it can do. Write βMy alienβ¦. sentences.
Astrid knew she wanted to be an astronaut when she grew up.
When her daddy asked her about all the things an astronaut has to do β Astrid said she could do them eg eat space food out of a tube, go around the world lots of times, move in near-zero gravity, do science experiments in space.
When a rocket takes off, there is always a countdown. Crouch down on the floor next to your table and count down from 20 to 0 then say βBlast off!β and jump up.
Today we are going to make a picture of a rocket with a tail of fire that will be a number line 0-20 or 20-0.
You will need to stick your number line to your rocket.
Draw an alien - decide how many legs, fingers, eyes, antennae, heads your alien has.
Now draw a new alien thinking about how many legs, fingers, eyes, antennae, heads your alien has.
Write some addition sentences about your alien.
For example:
9 (heads) + 4 (eyes) = 13
How many number sentences can you write about your 2 aliens?

Watch and listen to the story of Otto the Book Bear. Discuss the main events and characters with a grown-up.
Click on this link to watch the story
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UEyVSPdbvr7BKCqVWgnGvPnvO19TuLj6/view?usp=sharing
Draw a story map of Otto's journey from home to the library. He walked through the city past shops and tall buildings. He walked on busy pavements where it was crowded with people. He saw lots of lorries, buses, cars and bikes on the roads. He even went up to the city's rooftops.
Draw 4 different story characters that you know well. It could be story characters from well-known stories such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man, The Gruffalo or even the witch from Room on the Broom! It's your choice! Make stick puppets of the story characters you have drawn. Act out the story for your grownups at home.
Otto enjoyed practising his writing of nursery rhymes and stories. Choose a nursery rhyme or story that you know and write it.
Cut up the 0-20 (or 0-30) numbers to make number cards. Shuffle the cards and then put them back in the right order. Find some dried beans/pasta to use for counting. Pick a number and match the correct amount of dried beans/pasta to that number.
Repeat with all numbers! Can you say the number that is 1 more or 1 less than your chosen number?
Can you say the number that is 2 more or 2 less than your chosen number?
Get a pot of 10 dried beans and 3 bears just like Otto! Share out the dried beans.
How many does each teddy have?
Is it fair?
How could you make it fair?
Repeat with either more bears or more beans.
Each time find ways to make it fair!
We are going to find out about odd and even numbers. Have a pot of 20 dried beans and sit with a grownup. Choose a number from 1-20 from the choosing number board and make a matching set of dried beans. Now share the dried beans between you and your grownup saying 'One for you and one for me' until they are all used. How many beans do you have? How many beans does your grownup have? Do you have the same? We call this an even number. If there was 1 more for either you or your grownup then there is an odd one out - that is an odd number. Continue to investigate all the numbers from 1-20 to find out which ones are odd and which ones are even.
We are going to play spot the double! A double is when you add two numbers that are the same! Take it in turns with your grownup to roll 2 dice. How many doubles can you spot? If you rolled a 3 and another 3 then that is a double! How many is double 3? Count up the spots on both dice - 3+3=6 so double 3 is 6. Write all the doubles you find.

Watch and listen to the story of Oliver's Vegetables. Discuss the main events and characters with a grown-up. Click this link to watch the story
Each day Oliver tried a new vegetable. Make a chart to match the vegetable Oliver ate on the correct day of the week. Here is an example of a chart you could make...
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YsDdAYF-xwtcpUSJel8SOE-y4RcVsvCqY9Jxo1EegAw/edit
Every day this week, draw or write all the vegetables you have eaten. See if you can be a super vegetable eater!
Oliver had to eat every vegetable he found in the garden! You are going to write a Vegetable Salad recipe. A recipe is a set of instructions that is set out in numbered steps. At the start of each numbered step there is a 'bossy' word like 'Chop..' 'Wash...' 'Mix..'
You need to start with a title - for example Potato Salad. Remember before we make any food for others we always have to wash our hands and then put on an apron. After that you can work out with your grown-up what to do to make your very own vegetable salad. When you have finished you can eat it for lunch/dinner!
Here is an example of a vegetable salad recipe
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wZMu1wXD7yMpJGBWbls3jjAZfbWVZREN2d1YGQ5LR6w/edit
When Oliver got home from staying at Grandpaβs house, he wrote a letter to Grandpa to say thank you for having him to stay. What else might Oliver want to thank Grandpa for? (playing the vegetable game, trying out new vegetables, making and trying new recipes apart from chips). Look at the example of a letter written to Grandpa. Pretend you are Oliver and see if you can make up your own 'thank you' letter to Grandpa.
Here is an example of a letter written to Grandpa

Watch and listen to the 'How Many Legs? story. It is a laugh-out-loud counting story that also rhymes!
Click on this link to watch and listen to the story:
Make up your own addition questions to ask your grown-up at home. Each addition question needs to start with the words, 'How many legs....?' just like in the story. Here are some examples: 'How many legs does a cat and a dog have altogether?' 'How many legs do 2 dogs have altogether?' Can you find out how many legs are there altogether in your house?
Now your grown-up will make up 5 addition sentences to ask you starting with 'How many legs...?' This time can you write down the addition sentence including the answer using numbers and the + and = signs? So your grown-up says 'How many legs does a rabbit and a parrot have?' You write 4+2=6.
In the story 'How Many Legs?' there are lots of rhyming pairs. Can you spot the rhyming pair of words in this sentence from the story: 'How many legs would there be if a polar bear came for tea?' Yes, that's right 'be/tea' rhyme! Now listen to the whole story again and say the rhyming words you can hear on each page.
Draw and make a list of all the food you might need for your animal tea party.
Write an invitation to the grown-ups at home to join you at your animal tea party! Don't forget to say when and where the tea party will be! Enjoy your animal tea party!!
