Hometown Honey Balsamic Vinaigrette
"Blue Collar Values, Golden Taste"
Hometown Honey Vinaigrette is a student-driven business that makes use of locally sourced ingredients to produce a quality product for both wholesale and retail purposes. Our goal is to mass-produce our product and sell it in markets and stores throughout Pennsylvania. As our business grows, it would be a great accomplishment if our product were sold in stores nationwide. It is our hope that as our business grows:
We will assist the student(s), who provide the honey to grow their apiaries, so they can meet the demands of our product.
We will support our community through partnerships.
Students will gain experience in the food science industry.
All promotional materials for the business will also be designed by student artists.
Honey is one of the most unique substances out there. Many factors, including what the bees are foraging on, affect its taste, color, and consistency. These changes in the honey in turn affect the final color, consistency, and taste of our product. Honey allows us to differentiate our final product because of the unique qualities of our homegrown ingredients.
Michael Lewis is our bee and honey expert. In addition to supplying honey for the vinaigrette, he is also highly involved in our FFA. He was the 2021 Learning by Doing Grant Recipient.
One project that I have pursued with my apiary, has been installing an observation bee hive. This beehive was installed as educational material, however, it has the goal of in the future being able to produce honey to be used to supplement the Hometown Honey Vinaigrette. To install this I had to write a grant to fund the observation hive. I also had to write a management plan for the use of the school as well as documents regarding the safety of students in the presence of the beehive. An agriculture classes has even received beekeeping training in hopes that in the future they will be able to work with the observation beehive.
