SOPHOMORE YEAR REFLECTIONS
SOPHOMORE YEAR REFLECTIONS
ENGLISH !
Recognizing Perspective: Explains various perspectives or interpretations of a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, and reflects an understanding of different contexts, such as access to knowledge, technology, or resources.
Sophomore year accel english focused very heavily on the skill of compression and composition. Writing essays over short novels that were read, novels that helped educate perspectives that are looked upon. This essay was based off of the book A Hope More Powerful than the Seas written by Melissa Felming. Fleming wrote this novel about her own experiences that she fought first hand while in Syria and her time trying to escape Syria.
I have always felt a passion towards women's rights, especially on women's rights centering safety. Women have always been seen as less than which is often related to weakness. In Syria women are seen as property, seen as just an object that can be won. This is not only happening in Syria but in so many other countries around the world. Fleming wrote about her experience and it gave me more open eyes to the way of life that women are having to life. This essay opened my eyes to much more than just learning about new cultures, but learning about different ways that women live.
SPANISH !
Communicating Ideas: Demonstrates an understanding of a specific audience by communicating and collaborating using verbal and non-verbal behavior, languages, and strategies that are appropriate to the specific audience.
Sophomore year Spanish 3 was extremely group based. In the beginning of the year we were put into small groups of 4 that were called our “familias”. Within these groups presentations were completed, assignments were completed, and every day class time was completed together. This group learning was vital for the ability to learn how to speak ideas and thoughts clearly in Spanish to peers. Without this group learning experience, the use of Spanish would have never been able to be used with the courage and bravery that it was used in during that year in the classroom.
Sophomore year Spanish was in the ISSN domain of “Communicating Ideas” because it taught me how to communicate in an effective and calm way throughout the whole school year. It taught me the skill and knowledge of being able to build a strong and stay consistent with group mates. Being able to help others grow educationally as well as help myself grow. I learned when it was needed to take the leadership role but also when it was my turn to take a step back and let the others in my group take the lead and let their thoughts be heard. One of our assignments was finding a home that our familia could live in. This was a heavily group lead project because we had to all share ideas of what would fit each of us best, and what questions were best to be answered suited for us.
HISTORY !
Recognize Perspectives: Expresses a clear personal perspective on a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, identifying an influence on that perspective.
Sophomore year JAGS american history was a very hands on class, similar to how freshman year JAGS world history was. Almost everything was group based, or if it was individually completed, the help of classmates was always supported and encouraged. One of the most used tactics to learn in this class was the use of gallery walks. Huge posters that were filled top to bottom of information would cover all the classroom walls as well as the hallways surrounding the classroom.
The use of the gallery walks related to the ISSN domain of “Recognize Perspectives ” because information was not only taught in a factual base but it was taught in depth about the effects on people. Learning closely about the huge role that the Civil Rights had on society from then to current time in the United states. Finally being taught that history doesn't end when the dates end, but the effects having lasting effects that changes all of society.
SCIENCE !
Recognize Perspectives: Explains various perspectives or interpretations of a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, and reflects an understanding of different contexts, such as access to knowledge, technology, or resources.
In sophomore year chemistry a large portion of class time was given up to focus on the summit night project. This project was a documentary that had to be 15 minutes long. This documentary had to focus on a UN goal that was compared upon 2-3 different countries. All of these countries had to have a very different approach on completing and keeping up with accomplishing the UN goal that was chosen to focus on.
This class and project was in the ISSN domain of “Recognize Perspectives” because it required a large amount of research on the different perspectives and struggles that each country faces. My group focused on Health Care. The countries that were studied were the United States, Canada, and Hati. All have different plans in place and all have different struggles that their systems and people are facing. This opened my eyes especially to the pain that Canadians and Haitians are facing. As I was aware of the faults of the US system I never took the time to educate myself on other countries.
