In Year 2, we continue to build upon our phonics knowledge and to learn two new sounds each week. Alongside this, we focus on a class text in which we apply key reading and writing skills. Spelling, grammar and punctuation plays a fundamental role in every lesson and we really focus on ensuring that the children have a deeper understanding of how to edit and improve all of their writing within all areas of the curriculum.
Each day we read a story related to our inquiry and then answer questions about the text using our Reading Rainbow lenses. This enables us to develop our comprehension skills as well as enhance our reading skills. We focus on one element from each category during a session and it really enables the children to have a greater understanding of what they have read, particularly when it comes to inference.
During this module we have been focusing on the book, 'Duffy's Lucky Escape.' This has provided the children with rich language which they have been using within their own writing as well as creating strong discussions within the class. The children took great pleasure in sequencing the story and then creating their own news report. It has also explored how pollution is impacting on our oceans and our own responsibilities as global citizens.
During World Book day, each class chose an image from 'The Mysteries of Harris Burdick'. The images promoted lots of interesting discussion surrounding the meaning behind the pictures and the story that was supposedly written to go alongside them. We then looked at the work and techniques of Henri Rousseau and the children have enjoyed creating their own interpretation of the images.
