English in reception finds itself in many different forms.
Firstly, our phonics lessons. Each week we learn two new sounds and a tricky word. For each new sound we have a reading day and a writing day. On reading days we focus on reading and recognising the new sound. We will read words and sentences that include the new sound and previous sounds we have learnt to revise our learning. On a writing day, we do exactly as it says on the tin: we learn to write that sound. This is where we apply our learning and write words and sentences. Below you can see some examples of our phonics work.
We also love to apply our English learning during our independent inquiry time. We have different provocations each day to inspire us to write. We like to link this to our central idea where we can show our transdisciplinary understanding. It would be great if you could work on independant writing at home with your child. This might look like dictating words/sentences and letting them practise retrieving knowledge to write the correct sounds.

We also lead guided reading sessions every day. We use the Reading Rainbow lenses to get a deeper understanding of our weekly text. On a Thursday, we get to act out our story of the week and practise our drama skills which are also linked to English. Here are some of our performances of the story ‘Lost and Found’.
Lastly, we would like to share our World Book Day celebrations with you. We loved dressing up as our favourite book characters and completing different tasks. We did some art work and wrote about ‘The Mysteries of Harris Burdick’. We also discussed our favourite books.
