All our Units of Inquiry have a linked core text which supports our areas of learning and lines of Inquiry. We are using our core text as the basis for our reading and comprehension work.
This module we have thoroughly enjoyed our introduction to the world of Omar - a child with a huge imagination who hates marshmallows! Omar's family are Muslim and the text helps us understand traditions and celebrations. We are currently thinking about the characters and reasons for their behaviour.
We started the module with a writing task based on a lovely short animation called The Wishgranter. This proved to be an excellent stimulus for our descriptive writing, thinking about the character, the setting and the wish-granting machine itself.
Through our writing activities we also focus on the different aspects of grammar and punctuation that form the National Curriculum. For example, we used prepositional phrases in our setting description.
For World Book Day, we selected the image above to work from. We came up with some fantastic questions and theories about the picture and it provoked excellent discussion. We took the ideas alongside our previous work on description to create a descriptive poem showing what the birds might see as they fly out of the window.
We also created some fabulous artwork showing the scene outside the window.
Art work and poetry based on The Third Floor Bedroom from our World Book Day text.
Spellings - We are using the Purple Mash spelling scheme to set our weekly spellings. We develop our understanding of the vocabulary by researching the meanings of the words and apply them to sentences. We also practise spelling the words using Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check. The related spelling quiz in Purple Mash supports our learning and children can access this at home as well.
