INTENT: Children to research a famous inventor.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were shown the inventors they will be looking at this term, these are Orla Kiely and Barry Smith. In groups, the classes researched about Orla Kiely to find out exactly why she is celebrated.
IMPACT: Children researched Orla Kiely and created a poster to show this information.
INTENT: Children to learn how to thread and sew effectively.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were given a carousel of different activities all to help them be able to sew and thread a needle. They had to work on their fine motor skills in order to achieve this and the class enjoyed being able to use needles in different materials.
IMPACT: Children now know how to thread and sew effectively.
INTENT: Children to make a finger puppet.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children used their designs from a previous lesson to create their own finger puppets. They had to get 2 pieces of felt and sew them together using a running stitch.
IMPACT: Children have now created their own finger puppets.

INTENT: To explain who Francis Wolle is.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children learned about Francis Wolle and his invention of the paper bag in 1852. Children explored how his design has been used over time identifying the change from paper bags to plastic and discussing why this might be.
Children had a go at making a paper bag using his design, discovering their bags lacked space and durability.
To prepare for their final outcome of designing and making their own cereal packaging, children discussed the purposes and features of cereal boxes.
IMPACT: Children can now identify Francis Wolle and name his famous invention. Children can identify the purpose of packaging.

INTENT: To use a net to create a box.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children practiced cutting and folding a net of a cuboid using the tabs to securely join and make a box.
IMPACT: Children now understand how packaging starts as a net and is then constructed to make a 3D shape. Children understand the must cut accurately and use tabs to securely join their box.

INTENT: To use scissors to score lines and make card easier to fold.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children began by comparing folding paper and card. Children identified folding card was more difficult to accurately fold as it is thicker.
Children were introduced to scoring as a technique to make card easier to fold. Children practiced drawing lines on card and scoring them with scissors before folding.
IMPACT: Children can now use scissors to score card so it is easier to fold.

INTENT: To draw a net of a cuboid with tabs.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children used graph paper to measure and draw their own nets of a cuboid. They added tabs so they would be able to securely join their boxes.
IMPACT: Children have now drawn an accurate net of a cuboid which will be used as a template to make their own packaging from card.

INTENT: To use graphics and decoration to make an appealing final project.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children used their net templates from the previous lesson to cut a net out of card. They applied their knowledge of scoring to ensure their folds were accurate so their boxes could be securely joined.
Children decorated their boxes with eye-catching colours, pictures and fonts to make their packaging appealing.
IMPACT: Children have designed and constructed packaging for cereal.

INTENT: To understand what linkages and pivots are. To know who Emily Nash is and the products she makes.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children explored linkages and pivots as a type of mechanism that enables movement. The explored how these mechanisms are used in daily objects such as scissors or windscreen wipers.
They were introduced to Emily Nash, a Bristolian designer who makes greeting cards.
Children explored various greeting cards, some with mechanisms, to consider what makes an appealing greeting card.
IMPACT: Children understood interactive features made greeting cards more appealing and used linkage and pivots mechanisms. Other appealing elements included thoughtful messages or colourful pictures and fonts.

INTENT: To make a linkage and pivot mechanism.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children explored different linkage mechanisms using split pins to create fixed or moving pivots.
Children discussed how these mechanisms could be included in their final design and what elements might be innovated or adapted to be relevant for a birthday card.
IMPACT: Chilren can make a linkage and pivot mechanism and consider which one will be the most appropriate for their final design.

INTENT: To design and make a greeting card that uses a linkage and pivot mechanism.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children applied their knowledge of linkages and pivots alongside appealing design to create an interactive birthday card with a moving element.
IMPACT: Children made a greeting card and used linkages and pivots to make an element of it move.
