Gate Manipulation refers to the scientific and alchemical methods developed to control the activation and deactivation of Gates (metaphysical conduits that connect individuals to supernatural realms of power). Two substances dominate this field: Bouros, a suppressive agent developed to close Gates, and Arkane, a volatile drug that forces Gates open.
Bouros remains the cornerstone alchemical agent in the practice of External Gate Manipulation (EGM). Initially developed under ecclesiastical supervision, the drug was designed as a therapeutic intervention for Witchbreeds, individuals born with active Gates, once thought to be vessels of demonic possession. The Church of the Father heralded Bouros as a divine remedy, branding it “an elixir of soul-restoration and spiritual correction.”
In clinical application, Bouros functions by forcibly shutting a subject’s Gate, severing their access to supernatural abilities. Short-term use sees relatively few side effects and is often prescribed in low doses to suppress particular powers or help mythics integrate more easily into broader society. However, long-term administration reveals numerous serious complications:
Despite the Gate’s closure, energy continues to collect behind it, much like the ever-growing pressure behind a dam. Should therapy be halted or interrupted, the sudden release can trigger violent and uncontrollable manifestations of powers, posing threats to both the patient and bystanders.
Continued exposure results in diminishing returns, with patients requiring increasingly higher dosages to maintain effect. This growing dependency has pushed more radical alchemists and fringe scientists to pursue permanent Gate-severance, though such methods remain unproven and in almost all cases lethal to the patient.
Generic versions of Bouros are widely circulated, particularly in urban centers. Though less potent, these variants provide moderate relief to less-privileged witchbreeds seeking to maintain a low profile in societies still wary of them.
Excerpt from a Church of the Father public sermon
"Though born touched by the fiend’s breath, the witch blooded may yet be returned to grace. Through Bouros, the Father grants us not a cure, but a path, hard-earned and narrow, for the wayward soul to walk back into His light. Let not the faithful falter, for even a corrupted vessel may be purged and made worthy again."
Arkane’s origins are unknown but have always been shrouded in mystery and rebellion as its believed to have emerged in direct retalliation to the creation of Bouros. Arkane is a chemical agent that does the unthinkable: it opens gates, all gates. Unlike Bouros, which suppresses what is seen as unholy, Arkane invites that power in. Its effects are unpredictable, temporary for most, but occasionally permanent, especially in individuals who are Witchbreed but whose gates had previously remained dormant. This has made Arkane both a tool of awakening and a symbol of resistance.
In subcultures and insurgent networks, Arkane has found a second life as a drug of empowerment. Despite being cut with various agents to increase bulk and profitability, even diluted forms retain the ability to awaken supernatural traits in witchbreed and non-witchbreed alike. Dealers armed with Arkane-boosted abilities serve both as enforcers and as living advertisements for the product’s potential.
A growing body of illicit academic research, some funded secretly by the Church, has identified Arkane’s potential as a detection tool. Airborne particles or minimal skin exposure have triggered micro-reactions in latent witchbreeds, raising the possibility of using Arkane in covert sweeps or social purges.
Excerpt from a rebel broadcast by Commander Sairen Vex, Witchbreed insurgent leader:
"They called us broken. Cursed. Said our blood burned with borrowed flame. But then came Arkane. It didn’t save us. It reminded us. Reminded us that we were never hollow. That our power wasn’t some demon’s leash, but a birthright they tried to lock away. They shut the Gates, so we kicked them open. And if the Father watches, let him weep for we are the children he cast out, and we have come home with fire in our eyes."
