Notes from Digital Learning and School Library Services
November 2021
The Digital Learning Team has been busy updating our One Byte at a Time (1B@T) microunits. Remember these are short, self-paced PD’s focus on the products available to BCS teachers. See the section below for more information including a link to the One Byte at a Time website.
Also below is an awesome 360° degree tour of the Bolivia Elementary Library. If you have a need for a similar tour, make sure you see your DLS for assistance.
Finally, don’t forget to check out our Be Cyber Safe resources for November. It is increasingly important we work with all of our students to make them better, more aware, users of digital tools and media. We can’t assume they know the behaviors and dangers that exist online just because they have always had the internet. It is up to us to help them navigate - and balance - their use of these resources.

Why is Netflix, Disney+, Hulu or any other streaming service blocked? I teach that novel, topic, etc. and need to show the video.
Several things come into play here.
Terms of Service: Your Netflix account Terms of Service state that the account is for your personal, entertainment use. Your classroom is neither personal nor entertainment. The same goes for all other streaming accounts.
Certain Netflix Original documentaries have been deemed for educational use, HOWEVER, there is no way to filter these from the rest of the Netflix content.
Movies used in the classroom must meet Fair Use guidelines. In order to meet these, the movie must be tied directly to a content standard (no showing movies for rewards or holidays). In addition, they must be acquired legally and preferably from a vendor with licensing right for viewing.
We have a form that should be completed and then signed by your school administrator when showing any movie. See your media coordinator for more information

Keep It Simple: Schoolnet 23 Self Paced Course (NCEES Course)
This self-paced course should take approximately one hour to complete.
During this course, you will learn:
What is Schoolnet?
How do teachers and students access Schoolnet?
How do teachers create Schoolnet assessments using readily available questions?
How do teachers analyze the results of Schoolnet assessments?
Do you have a Newline Panel? Looking for some easy to access tools to help facilitate instruction? Newline has something just for you!
On the Home screen, select the Gadgets button. Look for Classroom Tools.
Click on a tool to launch it. Use the minimize button to hid it until ready to use during instruction.
You can now access magazine titles via SORA. We have added 55 simultaneous magazines to our digital library collection.
Magazines are accessible to users based on age appropriateness. Adults and high school students can access all 55 titles, middle school students can access approximately 45 titles, and elementary students can access approximately 25 titles.
Since titles are simultaneous access, teachers can use these for reading assignments and instruction or students (and staff) can read them for pleasure. There are even a few in Spanish!
Directions on using magazines in SORA are here.
Happy reading!
