Emergency Drills

Fire Drills

  • First fire drill will occur within the first five days of school and once a month thereafter.

  • When the fire alarm sounds, all students and staff will evacuate the building in accordance with the fire evacuation plan, which will be posted in each room.

  • Teachers will see that all doors are closed, unlocked and turn off the lights. The teacher will leave the room last--designate a student to lead the group out of the room. The teacher will count students as they leave.

  • Teachers with classrooms next to a restroom or other vacant rooms, will check those rooms for students and have them evacuate the building with your class, following the evacuation plan.

  • All teachers will take roll, and notify the principal immediately if someone is missing.

  • At the end of the drill, students should quickly return to their classroom.

Lockdown Drills

  • The school will go into a lockdown when there is an intruder, weapon/shooter on campus, or in any situation where law enforcement or administration determines a dangerous situation. The lockdown will continue until the “all clear” signal is given.

  • All students must go to the nearest classroom when the lockdown alarm is activated. Both interior and exterior doors are to remain locked, lights are to be turned off, and everyone must find a secure area in the room out of sight.

  • Law enforcement and staff will stop entrance and exit to the school during the lockdown period. Parents will not be allowed to pick up students from the school at any time during the lockdown period.

  • Practice drills are performed twice a year, once in September and once in January. On occasion, in partnership with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, a mock drill will be performed without notice. Parents will be notified via Social Media and phone call once any lockdown drill is performed.

Tornado Drills

  • When the tornado drill signal is given, students follow directions that are given by the teacher.

  • Students go to the specified part of the building and kneel down, remaining quiet.

  • Students return to the classroom at the end of the drill in an orderly manner.

  • A tornado drill is practiced one time a year, and typically occurs during Severe Weather Week in the spring.
