3. Tracking and Reporting Attendance

Requirements for student attendance shall be in accordance with the Buncombe County Schools Remote Instruction Plan. A student is considered present for the purposes of daily attendance during a remote instruction day and with the exception of the initial enrollment day as described above:

Families with extenuating circumstances should contact the school principal.

Public school units shall communicate the attendance procedures to students and parents/families before the first day of remote instruction begins. It is a local decision as to the method of this communication.

In order to be considered in attendance, a student must be present on-site for the school day or at a place other than on-site with the approval of the appropriate school official for the purpose of attending an authorized school activity.

4. Staff Roles and Expectations

See the linked page below as to whether certified staff must report to the school building on all remote instruction days, including teacher workdays that they opt to work. Further explanation is given there.

On an inclement weather day, certified staff must follow guidelines for Remote Inclement Weather Days in conjunction with the most current district guidance. Non-certified staff must follow the guidance of their supervisor.

On remote learning days, teachers must be accessible to parents and students during work hours. Instruction on these days will be synchronous and/or asynchronous.

5. Communication of Learning Targets

Teachers are expected to continue best practices for teaching and learning on remote instruction days, including the use of learning targets for every lesson. Standards-based pacing guides will continue to be followed to ensure complete coverage of the curriculum. In addition, evidence-based practices will be employed and use of time guidelines for remote learning will be maintained.

6. Technology Alternatives

When practicable, teachers will:

Download instructional materials prior to remote learning days.

Provide instructional materials for at-home use.

*Hot spots will be provided for families and staff with limited or no connectivity.

7. Remote Instruction for Students with Disabilities

Instruction will be provided to students consistent with their IEP or 504 Plan.
