HOW TO START A NEW STUDENT CLUB
The process for beginning a new student club begins with the students themselves. All new clubs are student-initiated and serve an educational and school service purpose. The following delineates the steps and important information in order to form a new club activity:
Students desiring to form a club shall petition in writing the Dean of Student Activities, Ms. Oricchio, who monitors student activities. The petition must state the purpose of and describe the activities of the proposed club, and must be signed by at least fifteen students. This document must include the name of a faculty member who is willing to advise the club. The faculty member must sign the petition as well.
This proposal, including the proposed advisor, is subject to approval by the principal and/or assistant principal.
Upon approval by the principal and/or assistant principal, the club is designated as a “First-Year Club.” There is no stipend for advisors during that first year. Any club that is approved according to the below stated timeline will be considered a “First-Year Club” through the following school year when the advisor’s stipend will go into effect.
At the end of the first year, the “First-Year Club’s” progress is assessed and a decision is made whether to continue the club for the following year when it would be recommended to the Board of Education as an official school club.
This new club is submitted, along with the established clubs and activities, to the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent for Business and Administrative Services who annually place the list before the Board of Education for approval.
The creation of a new club is also contingent upon its originality of pre-existing clubs AND the available finances to support it.
