The Maryland State Department of Education sets the basic standards for graduation requirements. Graduation requirements can change from year to year, so it's important to stay updated and to listen during school counselor presentations and announcements. A student's graduation cohort is based on the year they entered the 9th grade. For example, a student is in cohort 2021 (or Entry Year 2017) if they entered high school in the Fall of 2017.
CREDITS/COURSES: Please read through the document below very carefully. Graduation credit/course requirements are different based on when the student entered high school.
SERVICE LEARNING HOURS: Students must earn a total of 75 service learning hours. Students can start earning SLH in the 6th grade. If a student wants to complete a SLH project outside of ACCE, it must be approved by the SLH Coordinator first. The number of SLHs earned is on a student's report card and transcript. TESTING: Testing requirements change from year to year, so it's important to pay attention to the school counselor when they review this requirement. Students take four exams required for graduation: MISA (Science), American Government HSA, MCAP Algebra I, and MCAP ELA. It's important to take these exams seriously and to pass them the first time. For most students, all of these exams are taken by the end of the 10th grade year.
Students must meet certain criteria to be promoted to the next grade level. High school promotion is very different than elementary and middle school promotion. Promotion requirements are set by Baltimore City Public Schools. For high school, students are promoted based on credits. It does not matter if a student previously failed a grade or how old they are. Please see the promotion guidelines below. To read middle school promotion, click here.
Students must be in high school for a total of FOUR years. It does not matter how old a student is when they enter the 9th grade. For example, if a student failed once in elementary school and once in middle school, they may be 16 when they enter the 9th grade. They are still required to be in high school for four years. Student cannot be "put in their correct grade level" solely based on their age.
Failing classes risks the chance of not graduating on time. This is not elementary school or middle school when failures "disappear". Grades will follow students and affect GPA. More information about GPAs can be found here.
The Guidance Office will meet with students individually to review their progress towards graduation. The Guidance Office will also send home failures letters to families at the end of each quarter. This is another reason why it's imperative that the school has correct contact info!
If students have questions about their progress towards graduation,....
They should first ask themselves these questions: Am I passing my classes? Grades can be checked in Infinite Campus. Do I have 75 Service Learning Hours? SLH totals are posted on transcripts and report cards. Have I passed the required exams? This information is available on the transcript. Need a copy of your transcript or report card? Please see click here.
Check the "Are You on Track?" trackers in the hallways.
Make an appointment with their school counselor.
