As a school, here at Baysgarth we pride ourselves in having a strong Careers Curriculum and the opportunities we offer to our students. Here is a bit of an insight into what we offer.
Every young person needs high-quality career guidance to make informed decisions about their future. Good career guidance is a necessity for social mobility: those young people without significant social capital or home support to draw upon have the most to gain from high-quality career guidance. In 2013, Gatsby commissioned Sir John Holman to set out what career guidance in England would be like if it were good by international standards, resulting in the Good Career Guidance report. The eight benchmarks set out in the report serve as a framework for improvement in careers provision and have been adopted as part of the Government's Careers Strategy and statutory guidance for schools and colleges. In addition, The Careers & Enterprise Company now supports the implementation of the benchmarks in schools and colleges with a national network of support, resources and targeted funding. We have a Greater Lincolnshire (Local Enterprise Partnership) LEP representative and an Enterprise Advisor who come in once a term to go through Compass Plus with us and see where we are at in relation to the Benchmarks.
Our Enterprise Adviser works at Catapult and we have close links with Wren Kitchens and other local businesses of the wider community of Barton Upon Humber. We are working with Wren Kitchens and other local providers of the wider community of Barton to offer Work Experience placements and other opportunities for our students.
All local colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers are invited in to speak to our students and parents through different events throughout the academic year. What is the Baker Clause?
Introduced as an amendment to the Technical and Further Education Act 2017, the Baker Clause stipulates that schools must allow colleges and training providers access to every student in years 8- 13 to discuss non-academic routes that are available to them. It is expected that by doing so this will help address the UK’s productivity challenges and address skills shortages experienced across several sectors of the economy. This regulation has been enforced since January 2nd 2018. It has been updated for January of this year to include year 7, The new legislation goes further, stipulating when and how often schools must provide these encounters. The new law states two of these must be in school years 8 or 9, with another two in years 10 or 11. The compliance of this is monitored in Ofsted Inspections and through our Compass Plus assessments.
