Partnership in Math

At RHL - Math is a Shared Subject - In a normal year, I have your student in class 2 days a week, you have them 3 days a week, so we refer to it I am the 40% teacher, you are the 60% teacher. So partnership is very important.

Things you can do as their Math Teacher:

  • Sit with them during at home lessons

  • Assist them with Lessons/Exit Tickets, as needed

  • Give Feedback/Correct Exit Tickets - Answer Keys provided

  • Provide more practice/Re-teach concept if needed using resources provided by Mrs. Alexander

  • Help your student turn in weekly assignments.

  • Reach out if student is struggling or falling behind.

Things I will do as your child's math teacher:

  • Review assessment results for strengths and weaknesses and provide suggestions for next steps.

  • Provide weekly opportunities for problem solving, or other activities that include engagement with peers in order to have discourse around math.

  • Provide weekly math activities and assignments related to concepts in weekly work.

  • Provide alternative supports for ways to understand concepts, including extra practice, mini lessons, videos, small groups and one-on-one tutoring, as needed.

  • Provide assessment opportunities to monitor progress and provide feedback.

Below is the what partnership looks like when we are back on campus...

Parent volunteering is required in order for our class to be successful. Parents need to volunteer once a month for the entire class period. (You are welcome to come in more!) Your job while volunteering in class will be to run one of the stations that will happen for the last 45-50 minutes of class. I will provide directions of the stations that we are working on in class for the week. I will have a volunteer box set aside with workplace stations. It's imperative that parents show up for their volunteer days. It will allow me to work in depth with students, and not simply manage the class. It will ensure that students stay on task and focused throughout the entire block.

Our Class Schedule will normally look like this:

  • 8:15-8:35: Number Corner whole group discussion (Parents should utilize this time to look over the workplace station that they are going to run)

  • 8:35 - 9:20: Stations

      • Workplace station 1 (monitored by a parent volunteer) This volunteer will monitor and help direct students in two different work places (usually math games). The primary focus for this job is to make sure students have everything they need, and that they are staying on task and playing correctly.

      • Workplace station 2 (monitored by a parent volunteer)

      • Small Group time with Mrs. Alexander

      • Fact Fluency/Word Problem Application Journals (led by a parent volunteer) In this station a parent will lead a small group of students in solving one or two word problem. Students will start by working on their own, drawing out their thinking using words, numbers, etc. They will share their thinking with each other, as the parent volunteer facilitates discussion. The parent volunteer may also guide the small group through a whole group practice a fact fluency such as skip counting in fractions or decimals, or multiplying by tens, tenths, and hundredths.

  • 9:20 Clean Up

  • 9:25 - End of 1st Block

We will rotate through two stations each day. By the end of the week, all of the students will have gone through every station.

Schedule will be posted here
