Pilven is an Australian based artist who takes inspiration from her surroundings to create colourful, -functional ceramic wares. The gold lustre in her work is inspired by her hometown of Ballarat, a major Victorian gold rush town. Also taking inspiration from 'nerikomi', the Japanese technique of building forms with coloured clay. Pilven has a background in printmaking which she combins with ceramics in her practice- something I'm trying to do. Her work aims to " inject joy and happiness into everyday life. "
She stains porcelain various colours and rolls it out extremely thin. This is then ripped up and combined into one slab by rolling ontop of each layer. The form is made by cutting out a bevelled rectangle template which is wrapped around a supporting structure such as a PVC pipe. These are bisque fired, clear glazed and then gold lustre is added.
“Neriage” or “Nerikomi” is a Japanese technique for colouring clay in England referred to as Agateware. It involves laminating coloured clays together and throwing with them to create a swirled pattern. 'Neri' is a root word meaning “to mix”.
