Kopecky is a Czech painter and sculptor and also works with glass and installations. Gloria is inspired by the title of one of his paintings. Representing his current work which is mostly large-format canvases and large scale glass sculptural vases. His contemporary work can be distinguished by the colourful, expressive canvases and vases. There's a freedom of expression about them. Also, the more monochromatic, subtler works. Colour and space have always been relevant in Kopecky's work, as well as language. Word's have a significant impact on his practise; he has authored many poems and texts, and his pieces always have colourful titles. Which aren't demonstrative, but serve to stimulate the audience's imagination.
Vesmir / universe - before i saw the title I thought this looks like space
Kupka went to art school in Prague and Vienna. Later he also went to psychic seances, then moved to Paris started exhibiting, had no recognition until after he died when Meda Mladkova showed his work.
This collection maps his path towards non-figural art, which took place through figural depiction, unlike Kandinsky and Malevich.
Mladka's house in Washington has all of his work- passionate collector- also they weren't allowed to exhibit freely in Czechoslovakia.
Silica is the oxide of silicone
Crystalline solids always have an ordered structure. Glass has a random structure. Random, non crystalline, super cool liquids.
Flint or quarts = silica. Required in almost all glazes
Silica normally melts at 1710 but when you add other elements it melts at a lower temperature.
Equal molecules 1:1 lead mono silicate is soft glass
Adding alumina makes it more stable.
Flint, China clay, whiting (calcium carbonate), equal weights form a glaze at 1280.
Whiting is a common name used because it was used to paint buildings.
Led glazes
Alkaline glazes are blue ish.
Terra cygolata ? It's not a glass but not not a glass.

Questions for Jaz
Underglazes or stains or slips. Expense, ease of making?
Why my underglazes bubbled, Can I fix that.
How to use stains to paint with?
Screen printing on clay.
Thoughts this week are, very overwhelmed, and tired. Trying to organise what I'm doing but feeling mostly overwhelmed.
Ideas:
paper stencilling
Coloured slips and then waz resist the pattern/design on. Eg slip pink and wax resist the upsidedown U shaped and glaze ontop. Or wax resist flower pattern. Etc etc
Just wax resist and glaze with no slip underneath
make a stamp for leaves or flowers and stamp then glaze
Could slip, stamp then glaze.
using unprinted newsprint draw a shape on your stencil.
Using X-acto type knife cut out the stencil. Either, or both, positive or negative images can be used
Using a fine mist spray bottle, first spray the surface of the clay where you will place the stencil. Next carefully lay the stencil down on the clay and spray again to wet the stencil.
Allow the stencil to begin to dry until it is just damp and lighter in colour.
Using a soft bristle brush apply slip or underglaze
Allow it to dry leather-hard again.
can start applying more stencils to achieved layered effect.
When all stencils and slips have dried to leather hard you can start to remove stencils. Usually the areas where the stencils are will have dried faster allowing for easier visibility. Use an x-acto knife, or needle tool, to gently lift off the edge of the stencil, then peel it off.
-annoying that the stencils can't be re-used.
Can print designs onto wax paper and transfer the ink to wet or leather-hard clay.
draw the design on newsprint with pencil, helps give a rough idea of composition
work from the foreground to the background when creating transfer images on paper, starting with the outlines
follow the drawing with a slip-trailing bulb
brush on layers of colored slip to fill in the image
let the slip dry until it’s no longer glossy
wrap the newsprint around the cup and use a squeezed-out sponge to press the paper against the clay
then use a soft silicon rib to gently press the slip against the clay through the back of the newsprint
slowly start pulling the newsprint away, have to learn to judge the timing correctly
