The dress comes from his Spring/Summer 2022 collection, which references the history of queer spaces in London, and specifically the work of 18th-century textile designer Anna Maria Garthwaite – an outsider working in a male-dominated industry.

As the familiar ways of doing things have either been barred to us or exposed as redundant, fashion workers across the world have had to demonstrate resilience and creativity in ways like never before. Designers who once relied on the ready-made template of the runway, for example, have had to recalibrate and reconsider how to bring their work to their audiences with the same, or, even greater, impact.
Accordingly, fashion film has emerged from its relative niche into the mainstream, with everyone from the creative directors of venerated couture houses to the brightest young independent designers teaming up with directors and DOPs to continue brightening our lives with their visions.

Article by the BBC Image Kimono ensemble for WAFRICA by Serge Mouangu'The idea of creating a blueprint for a way of presenting the collection and the work that goes into it in a new way, a very transparent way, became really appealing…to enforce everything that we believe in at Maison Margiela. I thought this would be a really fantastic moment to illustrate this, and then of course I thought of you [Nick Knight] .’ John Galliano
After mourning the loss of the fashion show as we know it due to the confines of lockdown, John Galliano saw an opportunity to capture the creative process and enforce the core values of Maison Margiela. He called upon long term collaborators Nick Knight and SHOWstudio to realise a new proposal for the Maison.
S.W.A.L.K. opens the doors of the Margiela Atelier like never before in a fashion film cum documentary, via a myriad of film and surveillance techniques such as GoPro’s on the heads of the petite mains and drones flying into the studio. In conversation, Galliano and Nick Knight discuss the making of the film, Galliano's creative process and new beginnings for the Maison.
