The first day of winter is December 21. With the change of season comes a change in the weather. Although the weather has not been cold so far this year, we do accept colder weather soon! We value and support the opportunity for our middle school students to have free time outside every day.
Recess benefits students by:
Increasing their level of physical activity.
Improving their memory, attention, and concentration.
Helping them stay on-task in the classroom.
Reducing disruptive behavior in the classroom.
Improving their social and emotional development (e.g., learning to share and negotiate).
Our goal is to have students go outside for free time whenever possible. Students must wear the appropriate winter outerwear.
Students should be wearing long pants. No shorts in the winter months.
Students should come to school wearing a winter jacket, gloves, scarves, hat, etc.
Please discuss with your child the need to wear jackets at recess. Winter outerwear should not be removed when it is cold outside.
If your student needs a winter coat, please contact your school nurse and we may be able to help.
A sweatshirt or hooded shirt is not considered appropriate outerwear when it is cold outside.
Warm shoes should be worn. No flip-flops or sandals during the winter months.
Encourage your child to go outside and play after school as well!! If your student needs a hat or gloves tell them to stop in at the nurse. I have new hats and gloves available for students.
Physical and Dental Exams:
Please continue to send in physical exam forms for 6th-grade students and dental exam forms for 7th-grade students. If you need either of these forms they can be downloaded from the district site on the nursing services page, scroll to the health forms drop-down menus. We will also accept a printout from your health care provider's computer system- be sure it has your student's name and date of birth and a review of systems. You don’t need to use our form. If you need any of these forms sent home with your student call the nurse’s office at (814) 355-5466 ext 5005 or email me at rgriel@basd.net.
