In 8th grade science, we are near the end of our Phase Change unit. Students have been exploring what happened to the methane lake on Titan (Saturn’s largest moon) and how it could have occurred. So far, students have performed several hands-on experiments and investigated phases of matter on the molecular scale. One example includes making ice cream in class to demonstrate the phase change known as freezing! Lastly, students have been gathering evidence on all the variables affecting phase changes and have been knocking it out of the park!
Soon, they will have enough evidence to prove what happened to the methane lake on Titan. Students will communicate their findings through a mini poster and a slideshow. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

8th Grade ELA
Students are about to finish reading The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. While reading the book, they have completed some projects, including completing a Found Poem and creating a Character Profile. Both of these projects required students to look deeply at the text and determine its message. After Thanksgiving break, we will conclude the book with some final activities and projects.
MAP data results have been uploaded to the IXL program. Students can now complete IXL lessons that are leveled based on their MAP results. The kids now have an individualized plan to help remediate or accelerate their learning.
As we approach the holiday season, don’t forget this is a great time to purchase a new book for your child, and remember pencils make excellent stocking stuffers!!!

8th Grade Math
In both the Algebra 1 and Intro to Algebra classes, we have wrapped up the skills-based unit that we will use and apply the rest of the school year. These skills include, but are not limited to, solving equations, solving inequalities, simplifying expressions using different properties, and scientific notation.
Moving forward for the Intro to Algebra classes, we completed a unit on Statistics and Data Analysis. This unit helped students revisit some of the concepts they previously studied in 6th and 7th grade and helped them refine their analytic skills which they will then be able to apply in their science classes. We are now progressing through our main topic of the 8th grade year, Linear Relationships. Students will be analyzing, graphing, and solving linear concepts during our winter months.
As for the Algebra 1 classes, we have begun our unit on Linear Relationships. We have discussed the building blocks to these relationships, the patterns they follow, and will now build our own tables, graphs, and equations based on a linear problem. This will culminate in the students being able to solve real-world problems & situations based on their knowledge of linear patterns & relationships. On a side note, if a student ever forgets their graphing calculator and they are in need of one, a downloadable graphing calculator version is available at https://www.tinspireapps.com/Online-Calculators/TI84-Calculator-Online.php

🎉 Happy Holidays from Social Studies! 🎉
Our Social Studies classes have been going strong since the start of the school year, and we’re now diving into our Voting & Elections unit—just in time for the November Presidential Election! 🇺🇸
Students kicked off the unit by learning about the history and qualifications of voting, then explored how suffrage has expanded over time, and finally, took a deep dive into the steps of the voting process. To bring it all to life, we launched our Election Funnels project, where students have been analyzing key issues in the 2024 Presidential Election. They’ve researched candidates’ stances on topics that matter most to them, building critical thinking skills along the way. 🗳️💡
Stay tuned for next month's newsletter, where we’ll be sharing some of the amazing student work from this project!
And don't miss the slideshow below for a glimpse at our last unit on volunteerism! 🙌
