What is Matting?
Matting occurs when your pet’s fur becomes tangled and knotted, forming dense clumps that sit tightly against the skin. These mats can trap dirt, moisture, and debris, leading to discomfort and potential skin irritation. Long-haired breeds, double-coated pets, and senior or overweight animals who struggle with self-grooming are especially prone to matting.
Why We Care About Mats
Mats rest very close to the skin and can conceal pre-existing conditions such as inflammation, infections, sores, or parasites. Severe matting can restrict movement, pull on the skin, and reduce blood circulation, causing significant pain and discomfort.
Mats around sensitive areas — such as the ears, armpits, and groin — can cause particular concern. Mats near the ears may restrict blood flow and lead to hematomas; once removed, a sudden return of circulation can result in bleeding at the ear tips.
Why Mats Must Be Removed with Clippers
Clipping is the safest and most humane method for removing mats. Attempting to brush or comb out severe matting can cause pain, skin irritation, and unnecessary stress for your pet. Scissor removal is avoided, as mats often rest directly against the skin, posing a high risk of injury.
At Bark & Beyond Grooming Salon, our top priority is your pet’s safety, comfort, and well-being. We use professional-grade clippers and gentle handling techniques to remove mats effectively and safely.
