The Spider Dactyl is an invertebrate and its scientific name is Arana Dalylus . It is a predator and has a lot of interesting adaptations to help it survive in its habitat. It can grow up to one metre long.
It has dark green legs,lime green arms and a light green stripe on its back. The rest of its body is black and green. The wings are clear with some brown stripes. It has a hard exoskeleton type shell that it sheds as it grows. It uses its shell for protection like a turtle it can retract into its shell and for camouflage.It has pincers that grab the bloodwing and then kill it.
It lives in a very old volcanic area where lots of trees and plants have grown back. It gets up to 40 degrees celsius in summer and in winter it gets as cold as minus 5 degrees. It is very dry in autumn, spring and summer but can rain or even snow in the winter.
The Spider Dactyl uses its eight big strong hairy legs with suckers on the bottom of its feet to help it stay on the ground. Its wings help it hover and when it sees prey it dives down to catch its prey. It has 2 very strong arms which it uses to grab its prey . It kills this with its poisoner, this is on its abdomen and stabs and injects poison into the body of the prey to make sure it's dead . It eats birds, rats, snakes and other tarantulas. It has fangs which suck out the blood. Instead of excreting its waste it vomits it out of its mouth
The female Spider Dactyl is much larger than the male. After mating the female eats the male. Then she lays about 100 small eggs.in a small hole in the shade of a tree and covers this with pebbles and sand. The eggs incubate for seven months.The female guards the eggs during this time. The first eight to hatch eat the remaining eggs. They stay with their mother for eight months attached to her one on each leg. Then move on to find their own food and den to live. They can live up to 60 years old.
To escape predators it can run up to 15 km per hour in its underground tunnels. It breathes through a spiracle, this closes and it allows it to hold its breath and bury itself under the ground for up to 15 mins.
It can also use its wings to fly and escape predators. The Bloodwing dragon creature is it’s main predator.
Spider Dactyl are starting to become endangered because of the increased volcanic activity killing them and burying them in ash during an explosion. They are fascinating creatures.
