Space and Mixed Media:
Architecture in Puerto Rico
MYP3 Semester 2 Collection
Puerto Rican architecture features elements of both Art Deco and Modernism. For this summative assessment, students chose from a list of local buildings to represent and explore the characteristics of these two architectural movements. This project allowed them to investigate the relationship between these styles and the visual arts.
Students began by researching their selected building and its architect, gathering information about its historical context, design principles, and construction techniques. Using this knowledge, they created detailed drawings of the buildings, applying only value to emphasize form and structure. These monochromatic renderings with value, created a striking contrast against the negative space, which was enhanced with surrounding elements added in mixed media.
To enrich their compositions, students incorporated elements of Puerto Rican flora and fauna, using various materials and textures.
