Recounts


Lesson 1: RECAP!

What is a recount?

The purpose of a recount is the retelling or recounting of an event or a experience.

Success Criteria - to write an informative and escriptive recount that paints a picture in the reader's mind. Writing must include planning, correct tense, use of punctuation and a variety of sentence starters.

  • Record key information in a brainstorm; who, what, when, where.

  • Title, Date, 1, 2, 3 Planning in Google Doc or Writing book.

  • To include a variety of language features;

                • Past tense

                • Include senses (hear, feel, see, smell and taste)

                • Descriptive (adjectives-describing words or verbs-doing words)

                • Paragraphs

                • Punctuation (full stops, capital letters, comma, speech marks, question mark)

                • Simile (compare something to something else using like or as)

                • Full sentences that make sense

                • WOW or rich words

                • Sizzling start and clever conclusion

                • Facts

                • Alliteration

                • Onomatopoeia (sound)

                • Adverbs (ly)

                • Nouns (names)

                • Spaces between our kupu

Lesson 2: Brainstorming

Learning Intention - to record key information in a brainstorm about a recent 'moment in time'.

Success Criteria:

  • use of descriptive words

  • Past tense

  • Include senses (hear, feel, see, smell and taste)

  • Wow or rich words

  • who, when, why, what

  • Emotive words - emotions/feelings

Lesson 3 - Personal Recount

Learning Intention - to write a recount about the experience you had with the 'Bikes in Schools Programme.

Success Criteria - to write an informative and descriptive recount that paints a picture in the reader's mind about your learning during the Bikes in Schools sessions. Writing must include planning, correct tense, use of punctuation and a variety of sentence starters.

  • Brainstorm the order of events and personal highlights from this experience.

  • Record key information in a brainstorm; who, what, when, where, see, hear, feel

  • Sequence your recount using the 'Burger Plan'

  • Title, Date, 1, 2, 3 Planning in Google Doc or Writing book

Lesson 4 - Personal Recount

Learning Intention - to write a recount about Athletics Day.

Success Criteria - to write an informative and descriptive recount that paints a picture in the reader's mind about Athletics day. Writing must include planning, correct tense, use of punctuation and a variety of sentence starters.

  • Brainstorm with a buddy the order of events and personal highlights from this experience.

  • Record key information in a brainstorm; who, what, when, where, see, hear, feel.

  • Sequence your recount using the 'Burger Plan'

  • Title, Date, 1, 2, 3 Planning in Google Doc or Writing book

Lesson 5 - Publishing

Learning Intention - To publish your finished edited recount and post to your blog.

Success Criteria - Publish to a Google slide

  • Add fancy font, images and a background that are appropriate to your topic.

  • Remember the words are the most important and should be the star on the page (not the images or the background) Your words need to be a good size font and easy to read.

  • Post to your personal blog with quality stems.

Remember to link your published blog post and link it on the tracking sheet.

Lesson 6 - Creative Writing

Learning Intention - To write an Acrostic Poem about Fireworks and post it to your Blog using quality reflective stems.

What is an Acrostic Poem?

  • It creates a puzzle by using a letter in each line to spell out a word or message.

  • The subject's letter is usually placed at the beginning of each line, but it can be in the middle or at the end.

  • Every line of an acrostic poem must relate to the topic.

Success Criteria

  • To write an acrostic poem about 'Fireworks' using descriptive and emotive words that paint a picture in the reader's mind.

  • Post to your personal blog with quality stems.

Lesson 7 - Publishing

Learning Intention - To complete your publishing of your finished edited recount and post to your blog.

Success Criteria - Publish to a Google slide

  • Add fancy font, images and a background that are appropriate to your topic.

  • Remember the words are the most important and should be the star on the page (not the images or the background) Your words need to be a good size font and easy to read.

  • Post to your personal blog with quality stems.

Link your published blog post and link it on the tracking sheet.


Lesson 8 - Invitations

Learning Intention - To create an invitation for your upcoming Student Led Conference.

Success Criteria -

  • Using Google drawings, Gslides or Poster my wall to create a digital invitation to your Student Led Conference.

  • Follow the template provided.

  • Remember the words are the most important and should be the star on the page (not the images or the background) Your words need to be a good size font and easy to read.

  • Link your finished invitations to the tracking sheet below ready for printing.

Lesson 9 - Letter writing

Learning Intention - To write a letter to the Gisborne Herald about what Christmas means to you.

Success Criteria -

  • To follow the format of how to set up a letter

  • Write a letter and/or attach add a piece of creative writing or poem about the topic

  • Link your finished editing letter to the tracking sheet ready for printing.

Extension activity - To create a piece of animation about what Christmas means to you and post to your blog using qualtiy reflective STEMS.


Lesson 10 - Personal Recount

Success Criteria - to write an informative and descriptive recount that paints a picture in the reader's mind about Athletics day. Writing must include planning, correct tense, use of punctuation and a variety of sentence starters.
