Archaeology and Anthropology in the United Kingdom

Join us on an educational adventure into the past, and immerse yourself into the world of Ancient Britannia from an Anthropological perspective. Learn about Roman influences on modern populations, while experiencing modern archaeological techniques and observing human diversity in one of the largest cities in the world: London.

Join us in the United Kingdom for the Summer 2023 Program!

The courses covered during this study abroad program are Introduction to Physical Anthropology (ANTH 2301) and Introduction to Archaeology (ANTH 2302). There are no prerequisites for either class. For the Core Curriculum, Physical Anthropology counts as your Life and Physical Science/ Mathematics requirement, while Archaeology fulfills the Social and Behavioral Sciences requirement. What makes this program different?

  • The program involves you, as you learn in an immersive experiential environment.

  • Your experiences will take you through every aspect of archaeology and physical anthropology research.

  • Excavating at a 1600-1800 year old site, you will be directly contributing to Romano-British archaeological research.

  • Your exploration of ancient landscapes will take you to many ancient Roman sites, as well as sites from other periods:

    • the remnants of Roman towns and villas

    • Hadrian's Wall at the northern frontier of ancient Britannia

    • Stonehenge, with its namesake formation, burial mounds, reconstructed huts and much more

    • Edinburgh, Scotland, with its medieval charm

  • Museums and research centers will allow you to examine ancient artifacts and physical remains from different time periods.

  • A tour of the Thames Foreshore, will introduce you to thousands of years worth of artifacts exposed by the ebb and flow of the tide.

  • You will have free time to explore the modern amenities that London and the United Kingdom have to offer.
