I volunteered at the Texas Monthly BBQ Fest, which partners with Feeding Texas. This event took place in Lockhart. The duties that I took part in included running the booth for Feeding Texas and additional responsibilities to ensure a smooth running event.
This experience encouraged me to think more critically about food systems and their inefficiencies, not just at events but in society as a whole. It raised important questions about how we can improve sustainability, reduce waste, and ensure that surplus food is redirected to those who need it most. Getting to the root cause of food insecurity is essential.
I highly recommend taking a class with a service-learning component. It has been both eye-opening and rewarding.

My project focuses on my experience participating in a tree-planting event at Pease Park and the inspiration and lessons I gained from it. The community partner I collaborated with was Pease Park Conservancy.
My experience exceeded all expectations, leaving a large impact on me. It went so well that I was inspired to return and volunteer at Pease Park not only the next day but the day after as well. Through this experience, I discovered a genuine passion for volunteering and connecting with nature. The sense of peace and fulfillment it brought me was unmatched.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this class and project to other students. Engaging with the community and contributing where help is needed proved to be an incredibly rewarding experience. I gained far more from this hands-on involvement than I would have from merely writing a paper. This project was both enriching and transformative.

I attended a Community Leadership Simulation at ACC's Rio Grande Campus, Building 3000. Here we went through response simulation to a new Virus that was spreading rapidly through Austin. We were divided up into 2 groups; the public, and the government. After a discussion took place for 30 minutes or so, the 2 groups reconnected for a town hall meeting. The directors of the event were Marisela Perez Maita and Bryan Port.
I learned a lot about myself during this project. I chose to play a primary role despite signing up for an observer role. However, during the discussion portion of the event, I struggled to live up to the expectations of my role role and achieve my objectives. It was insightful to be in a position to see how crowds respond to the loudest in the room, regardless of what their true message is. I also found it very interesting to see what a town hall meeting would look like. This simulation caused me to develop a better sense of empathy for those who work in the government.
