Understanding the Immigrant Experience

STEPS
If you can, do an interview: The interview is honestly the best and easiet option for this assignment. The only reason you should not do an interview is if you genuinely do not know an adult you are comfortable talking to who left their homeland to come to the United States. Write some questions and then record the interview on your phone (audio or video) and turn it in - that's it! If you cannot interview anyone you need to choose from the color cartoon with 10-12 panels or the slide presentation.
Color Cartoon: The color cartoon and slide presentation assignments are different - it is not just about a cartoon vs. a slide presentation. For the cartoon, you can pick one immigrant's story and re-tell it as a cartoon. You can draw the cartoon yourself (on paper or online) but it has to be in color. Or you can use an AI image generator (such as the Canva one linked above) - you do not need to print it out - you can turn in a pdf, etc. Remember that the person must be from Mexico, Ireland, Italy, China, Japan, the Carribean, Russia, Eastern Europe, or Africa (after 1865). You can do someone from another place but only if you check with your teacher first.
Slide presentation: This option is probably the most difficult in terms of research. You cannot just choose one person and tell their story - you need to make your Google Slides, etc. about an entire group of people and their immigrant experience (such as Chinese immigrants or Irish immigrants) and explain a kind of timeline or major events from the 1840's until the present (you do not actually need to start in the 1840's but that is the farthest back that you should start). Read the directions carefully - you need to include pictures, graphs, and charts, etc. Google Slides is a good option for this because it is easy to turn in electronically.
Directions: Check the directions more than once. Make sure you are following the directions.
Due Date: Make sure you finish and turn in your assignment on time. This assignment is due on Tuesday, January 28th (that is one week from today!)
Questions: If you need help or are unsure of anything, ask questions. You can ask Mr. Osborne or me.
Research: A good place to start your research is by using the links above. If you use Google, make sure that your source is reliable. There are also books available in our library that you can use. Search our library catalog using the link at the bottom of this page.
LIBRARY RESEARCH
You can conduct research in the SGHS library in a number of ways. Exploring these options will help you narrow down your research question.
Physical Books: Nonfiction books on medical topics and issues can be found in and about the 610 section of the library. For example, a book about mental health is 616.89 and a book about smoking is 612. However, there are books about health and medical issues in other areas of the library as well. Search the online library catalog or ask the librarian for help. You can also search for books/topics in the library catalog here: https://sangabrielhs.goalexandria.com/
Online Research Databases: Go here https://sangabrielhs.goalexandria.com/ to access our library's online databases for topics, articles, research, and more. ProQuest eLibrary is a good place to start.
Research online: You can start by checking out the links on this page (see above). If you are doing research online, make sure you are using reliable sources. In general, sources will need to have an author, for example, so if there is not an author listed on a webpage you will probably not be able to cite it as a source.
Take notes! You might find a good website to use as a source but then forget where it was - write it down and keep your notes (on paper or on a Google Doc) organized. If you are working with a group, you will want to create a shared Google Doc. See below for information about APA Style.
