STEPS
Partner: If you are working with a partner or a group, make sure to sit with them and create a shared Google Slides or Google Doc where you can all share notes and information
Enclaves: There are several ethnic enclaves in Los Angeles that you can choose from to research including: Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Crenshaw/Leimert Park, East Los Angeles, Historic Filipinotown, Inglewood, and Koreatown. You might have one that you really want to choose or you might want to do a little research on each of them before you pick one.
Five Questions: There are five questions you need to answer about each of the enclaves - including finding a map of the area. Check the assignment directions.
Notes: Keep track of the websites you visit as you research. If you have a partner or group, save the website URLs on your shared Google Slides or Google Doc. Electronic notes are better for this because it is easier to copy and paste website URLs and visit them again later - do not worry about citing the websites in proper APA style for now - just copy and paste the website so you can use it later.
Research: A good place to start is with the links above. You can also read the section below about library research or ask the teacher or librarian for help.
APA Citations: You will need to cite every source (website, YouTube video, article, etc.) that you use for your project. Keep a list of everything and see the APA Citations section below for more info.
APA CITATIONS
You will need a list of the sources (websites, articles, videos, etc.) that you used to get information for your project. This References list will be in APA Style and will be a part of your final project and final grade. For more about APA citations and references, see the information below:
APA Style Guide: This is a pdf version of the paper I handed out in the library.
Citation Machine: You can use this website to create APA citations.
The OWL at Purdue APA Guide: This website will answer all of your questions about APA citations.
LIBRARY RESEARCH
You can conduct research in the SGHS library in a number of ways. Exploring these options will help you with your research.
Research online: You can start by checking out the links on this page (see above). If you are doing research online, make sure you are using reliable sources. In general, sources will need to have an author, for example, so if there is not an author listed on a webpage you will probably not be able to cite it as a source. Wikipedia, for example, is not a reliable source but there may be good sources at the bottom of a Wikipedia page - also, a Wikipedia page may give you ideas of topics you can then go and research elsewhere.
Take notes! You might find a good website to use as a source but then forget where it was - write it down and keep your notes (on paper or on a Google Doc) organized. If you are working with a group, you will want to create a shared Google Doc. Check with your teacher if you need to record sources using a certain style (for example, APA Style).
Online Research Databases: Go here https://sangabrielhs.goalexandria.com/ to access our library's online databases for topics, articles, research, and more. These databases may be helpful but for this project they are probably not the best place to start.
Physical Books: The library also has nonfiction books about Los Angeles, but the information may not be as up-to-date as online resources for this project. Search the online library catalog for books or ask the librarian for help. You can search the library catalog here: https://sangabrielhs.goalexandria.com/
