As part of the SAT Suite of Assessments, the PSAT/NMSAT is designed to help prepare students for the SAT, college, and careers. Historically, students who took the PSAT/NMSQT scored higher on the SAT, on average, than those who didn’t take the test. It also measures what you're learning in school, determines if you're on track, and opens doors for opportunities to prepare and pay for college. Taking the PSAT/NMSQT offers the following benefits to help you prepare for your academic future:
Connect to $300 Million in Scholarships: Check "yes" to the Student Search Service® question on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet or opt in online to connect with 1,500 colleges and over $300 million in scholarships.
Be Eligible for the National Merit® Scholarship Program: When you take the PSAT/NMSQT, you may meet requirements to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program and compete for national recognition and college scholarships.
Learn Your Academic Strengths: After you take the PSAT/NMSQT, your score report will show how well you performed and which college-level AP courses match your strengths.
Access Free, Personalized Prep: Prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT with free resources from College Board and Khan Academy, and use your PSAT/NMSQT score to create a personalized SAT study plan through Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy.
The PSAT/NMSQT has three parts: the Reading Test, the Writing and Language Test, and the Math Test. See sample PSAT/NMSQT questions.
PSAT/NMSQT scores are available online in December.
All interested sophomores (10th grade) and juniors (11th grade) can sign-up using the form above.
All eligible 10th and 11th grade students who sign-up with their counselor will be charged a $20 fee for the exam. However, there will be a scholarship available for students to apply for that will cover half of the exam fee if awarded.
The PSAT/NMSQT is approximately 2 hours long and will be given in October to all interested sophomores (10th grade) and juniors (11th grade). It is administered online via the Bluebook app on school-issued Chromebooks. If you do not have a school-isssued device, one will be provided for the test.
PSAT/NMSQT scores range from 320 to 1520 and are on the same score scale as the SAT. This means that a score of 1100 on the PSAT/NMSQT is equivalent to a score of 1100 on the SAT. The only difference is that SAT scores range from 400 to 1600, because the difficulty level of the questions is higher than on the PSAT/NMSQT.
After you take the October PSAT/NMSQT, your scores will be available online in mid-December. If you have a College Board online account, you will get an email saying your scores are ready to view on the Student Score Reports website. If you don't have an account, you can create one for free!
