Emilie M. Townes

  • She is a highly acclaimed minister, scholar, author and activist. She attended college at the University of Chicago, where she got her Bachelors of the Arts and Masters Degree ( Maglott 1). Later on she attended Northwestern University to get her Ph. D. ( Maglott 1). In 2013, Townes became the first African American Woman to serve as Dean at Vanderbilt's School of Divinity (Maglott 1 ). She enjoys creating a supportive environment that values diversity in education.
  • She is deeply committed to activism in the academy and believes that scholars have a responsibility to intelligibly help folks think more deeply about the issues of our day to day lives.
  • She is best known for her countless lectures, speeches, and professional papers on where spirituality finds itself in the African American, womanist, and same gender loving communities (Maglott 1). A lot of her work is focused on social justice and theology, and also the role that faith plays in our day to day lives.


Stacey Floyd-thomas

  • Stacey Floyd-Thomas is the Associate Professor of Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt University Divinity School and College of Arts and Sciences (Vanderbilt 1). She is also in many other critically acclaimed groups.
  • Her research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of ethics, womanist studies, Black Church studies, and critical race theory with an overall approach to the study of Christian social ethics that engages into a broad questions of moral agency, cultural memory, ethical responsibility and social justice (Vanderbilt 1 ). Her work in social Christian ethics has a three fold focus: race, gender, and class (Vanderbilt 1 ). Floyd-Thomas also has many famous publications.

Melanie L. harris

  • Harris is the associate Professor of Religion at Texas Christian University, where she teaches and researches in many different areas including religious social ethics, African American religion, and environmental justice. She has also served as an associate minster in many congregations across the states.
  • Harris also conducts many workshops on racial justice, womanist ethics, and environmental justices, where she has patterned with lots of environmental and racial justice groups.
