Character Education is an integral element of our instructional program at Haviland Avenue. We focus on developing Safe, Respectful, Responsible citizens through a variety of embedded lessons that support students in these areas.
During the school year, teachers embed character lessons into reading, science and social studies, writing, and morning meeting, during the "teachable moment" that connects learning to real expereinces for our students.
During the WIN (What I Need) period each day, students in 1st and 2nd grade participate in one cycle of SEL and Gamesmanship by learning to play games, take turns, participate in conversation with peers, be active listeners, follow directions, and demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Our school counselor, Mrs. McCutcheon, teachers focused character education lessons monthly for all grade levels in conjunction with the library classes. During these sessions, students learn about respect and differences, responsibility, trustworthiness, perseverance and hard work, feelings, caring and kindness, fairness, citizenship, self-regulation strategies and problem solving skills.
The school PBIS (Positive Behavior in Schools) Team supports these values and lesson through a caritey of embedded lessons, activities, and integrated common eexpecations and language throughout the school. For more information about our PBIS team, please see the PBIS page in the Student Handbook.
