CONTACTS

ETR HealthSmart was adopted by the Auburn School Board in May of 2023 for grades K-8th grade. During the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years, Auburn Elementary and Middle School Health Committee members prioritized student outcomes from the ASD Health Standards. From there, the committee aligned HealthSmart lessons to the six core areas of health using those prioritized student outcomes.

STATE REQUIREMENTS

Senate Bill 5395 went into effect in 2020 with the requirement that all schools provide comprehensive sexual health education by the 2022/23 school year.   The two stand-out points from this bill are 1) the ability for individual school districts to choose a curriculum that is the right fit for their community and 2) a parent or guardian’s right to opt their student out of any or all lessons from a sexual health unit that they feel does not align to their home values.

An Auburn School District Health Advisory Committee was created consisting of a variety of community members including local churches, health agencies, Planned Parenthood, Auburn YMCA, parents, staff, and administrators. The committee’s goal was to use the national and state health standards as a guide to creating a K-12 health scope and sequence that represented our community of learners.
