The 2nd travelling unit we share in Auburn is the fitness unit. Intermixed with our soccer unit, students will self-select different pieces of equipment to workout with during the 2nd half of class. Students interested in continuing to work on their soccer skills can do so on 1 half of the gym while those interested in exploring the fitness unit can do so on the other half. These items include: mini-trampolines, weighted ropes, agility ladders, light dumbbells, light (padded) barbells, BOSU balls, medicine balls, sand bags, and dip bars. Students will receive instruction on exercises at recess once the weather warms up a little.
In the most anticipated unit of the school year, students will self-select from a variety of activities. Gymnastics stations include: vault, headstand/handstand, rings, rope climb/swing, somersault/cartwheel, and iPad partner pose. 5th graders are invited to participate in co-ed volleyball this January & February. Like basketball, our 5th graders will play against other schools (usually 9v9) and then again at a high school for a jamboree or two (10 minute matches). In PE, students will utilize a wide range of volleyballs from beach balls to over-sized trainers. Students will learn how to underhand serve, bump & set, as well as strategies to maintain a rally.
With conferences this week and Thanksgiving Break next week, some classes will not have PE due to the schedule. This is the perfect time for student-led activities. Students will self-select from a variety of PE equipment in the storage closet.

Rules consist of the following: 3 steps, 3 seconds, and 3 passes. Students are allowed to take 3 steps after catching the ball. They are allowed to hold onto the ball for 3 seconds before they must pass it to a teammate. They must also make at least 3 passes among their team before scoring a goal.
Grades K-2 will be introduced to the following games: Clean Out Your Room and Pin Down.
Mr. Roach was absent the last few days of school and will need to wrap up fitness testing by Friday. All classes will continue with throwing and catching activities with a focus on the frisbee (forehand & backhand throws).
