The following is a recap from the 2022/23 school year:
With the 5th Grade Junior Olympics coming June 13th, students will practice standing long jump, relays, and sprint races. Grades 3-5 will practice the Eagle Mile in prep for the class competition June 14th. Grades k-2 and all other grades will also practice field day mini games.
Students will participate in Mr. Roach's favorite racquet sport. Skills taught include the legal serve, modified serve, and ways to maintain a rally. The challenge for this unit will be to have a larger than normal amount of fun! Grades 3-5 will also finish their fitness testing (post assessment) for the year.
As America's fastest-growing sport, students will learn how to properly serve a ball and maintain a rally. Two challenges will be presented: 1) Pickleball Rally - how many times can a student rally a ball against a wall in 3ft. x 3ft. square in 1 minute. 2) Pickleball Dribble - how many consecutive dribbles can a student maintain without ball falling to floor. At recess, students will have 2 courts set up for extra practice.
In PE, students will participate in a variety of small-sided games as well as partner activities that help promote passing and catching skills. Students in grades 3-5 will utilize our NFL Flag Football kit to play small games at recess. The challenge for this unit, football throw, was to see how far one can throw a junior size football in feet.
Starting this week, students will be introduced to volleyball. With our 4th and final travelling unit (bowling) arriving next week, this unit will be broken up into 2 weeks. However, volleyball nets will now be set up at recess starting this week. The challenge for this unit will be a group activity: in a circle, how many consecutive hits (bumps and sets) can you and your team complete.
This week, students were able to vote on a team game to play. Previously taught games were given as choices. It is important to circle back and allow students to revisit learned skills throughout the year to enhance muscle memory.
Grades 3-5 also took part in a jump rope assessment as part of their intro activity.
With February being Heart Health Month, students will practice both short and long jump rope skills. Only the basics will be taught as students will be encouraged to practice at home, at recess, and as part of future PE warm-up activities. The challenge for the month is criss-cross jump rope (how many consecutive jumps in a row).
Helpful Links: 1) Find the right size. 2) Learn to jump rope.
Our 3rd rotating travelling equipment that our school receives from the district includes circus arts. In this unit, students will work independently and in small groups in a variety of stations which include the following: flower sticks, the diablo, juggling, stilts, pogo sticks, and balance boards. Check out this video for a tutorial on how to do the "3-ball cascade" juggle. The challenge for the month will be to see how many times you can do the pogo stick.
With this being a short week and an individual activity unit arriving next week, we will be playing team games at every grade level. The goal is for students to have fun and practice good sportsmanship!
Our 2nd rotating travelling equipment that our school receives from the district includes fitness equipment. This is the perfect time of year to focus on fitness as we have a 2 week break from school and with the cold & wet days, we're less likely to be as physically active as during the warmer months. In PE, students will focus on core strength and tag games. During our first full week back from break, grades 2-5 will partake in their 2nd PACER Test. Try to go outside every day during Winter Break, even if it's just to get the mail, make an extended walk out of it!
As one of the most participated in sports, it must be noted that many of our students do not have access to participate in organized soccer. While many of our students do play soccer at recess, the goal of Chinook PE is to focus on the basic fundamentals of kicking, dribbling, and passing. Students will also participate in a series of small-sided and whole group games. Check out this video for the 10 most common beginner mistakes. The challenge for the month is soccer juggling.
Auburn Schools have a rotating system in place where each school receives travelling equipment. Chinook was the first school this year to receive gymnastics equipment. For 3 weeks, students had 3-4 opportunities to practice a variety of skills related to balancing & tumbling such as: cartwheels, somersaults, handstands and back bridges. Students are encouraged to continue practicing push-ups, stretching and working on their grip by hanging from a monkey bar or pull-up bar daily! Those that performed a handstand for more than 2 seconds are recognized on the PE Wall for their accomplishment!
Auburn Schools have 5th grade basketball as one of the 3 team sports where students are able to compete against other schools within the district. During October, students at all grade levels were introduced to the basic fundamentals of ball handling skills (dribbling, passing & catching).
Fitness testing will take place at 2 points during the school year (typically in September and May). Grades 3-5 partake in the 20-meter PACER, Push-up, Curl-up, and Sit-&-Reach tests. At Chinook, 2nd graders also do the PACER test. Visit our WELNET page to learn more about how to login to your child's account to view their fitness scores. Check out our PE Wall page for the Chinook Elite!
The first few weeks of school, our students learned about recess games. We learned how to "Rock, Paper, Scissor" and problem solve on our own while playing at recess. Activities taught included: wall ball, 4 square, kick ball and variations of these games.
