The following is a recap from the 2024/25 school year:
In June, grades K-5 will partake in a variety of outdoor related activities such as the following: group parachute, frisbee, badminton, bocce ball, ladder ball and corn hole.
The 4th and final travelling PE unit that Chinook will receive this year is the bowling unit. The goal for this unit is to have fun while knocking down pins! Check out this lesson created by Magic School.
Grades 2-5 - will partake in the Pacer Test post-assessment.
Grade 5 - Jr. Olympic event practice (shuttle relay).
Students in grades K-5 will practice putting & chipping in this golf unit. With a partner, students will strike mini tennis balls with a club while attempting to hit Velcro targets & buckets.
Kids LOVE soccer. They've been asking about it ALL year. We will play 2-3 modified soccer games and work on kicking/passing with a partner. Our challenge for the unit will be soccer juggling. Those who can soccer juggle at least 10x will be recognized on the PE Wall.
Grades K-5 will kick off our fitness unit with jump rope. Jumping rope is a GREAT way to increase cardiovascular health as it is affordable and does not require much space! 3 challenges for the month of April will be: 1) 30sec. jump rope (30 or more), 2) long jump rope (20 or more) and 3) criss-cross jump rope (10 or more). We will also partake in Chinese jump rope activities.
Students will also explore lightweight fitness equipment (dumbells, barbells, medicine balls) as well exercise options at recess. This is a part of our district's rotating units (shared between schools).
Grades K-3 will partake in the Drums Alive unit. Grades 4-5 will engage in sport stacking (cup stacking) with the challenge for the unit being the 3-6-3 stack. Students who can perform this stack in under 10 seconds will be recognized on the PE wall.
Grades K-5 will practice using a long-handled implement twice this year; one being golf and the other hockey. During part 1 of this unit, students practiced ball control and striking with accuracy. With our district's rotating gymnastics equipment breaking up the unit, we picked up on part 2 of the hockey unit afterwards with team games for grades K-5.
Our 2nd district-wide rotating unit is gymnastics. All grade levels will partake in the following self-selected stations: headstand/handstand, somersault, cartwheel, rings, pull-up bar, rope climb/swing, single bar, vault, balance beam, and iPad station (group pose).
Students who can perform a handstand for at least 2 seconds or hang on the pull-up bar for at least a minute will be recognized on the PE Wall.
Grades 3-5 will partake in 1 more week of volleyball in PE to practice how to rotate during an actual volleyball game. Students will use a big beach ball to play team games.
Grades k-2 will partake in a variety of fitness related activities based on the needs of their classes.
Check out PE Wall to view the mid-year fitness assessment results.
5th graders are invited to participate in co-ed volleyball. Like basketball, our 5th graders will play against other schools one at a time (usually 9v9) and then again at a high school for a jamboree or two (10 minute matches). In PE, students will utilize a wide range of volleyballs from beach balls to over-sized trainers. Students will learn how to underhand serve, bump & set, as well as strategies to maintain a rally.
Grades 2-5 will also partake in the mid-year fitness assessment (including Pacer and Push-up).
Check out Welnet to view your scores.
3rd - 5th grade students will be partaking in the Let's Go Bicycle Education Program. This program was awarded to the Auburn School District through the Cascade Bicycle Club. Students are encouraged to bring their own helmets from home, although they are welcome to use those that come with the unit (with hair nets). Lessons will take place both in the gym and outside in the coned-off parking lot. Here are some videos to supplement the lessons.
Grades K-2 will work on a combination of throwing/catching activities and scooters.
Chinook's boy's & girl's basketball teams began practice in October with games scheduled against teams from other schools through November. In PE, students K-5 will learn the basic fundamentals of dribbling, passing & shooting.
Our 1st rotating travelling equipment that our school receives from the district includes circus arts. In this unit, students will work independently and in small groups in a variety of stations. The challenges for this unit are the following: 20+ hula hoop rotations, 20 meter stilt walk, 20+ pogo stick bounces, and 10+ seconds on the balance board. Results are posted on the PE Wall.
For those interested in learning to juggle scarves, check out the following videos:
1) the basics 2) 2 in 1 hand 3) juggling 3 scarves
As America's fastest-growing sport, students will learn how to properly serve a ball and maintain a rally. Challenge for this unit: Pickleball Dribble - how many consecutive dribbles can a student maintain without ball falling to floor. Students who can perform at least 20 dribbles will be recognized on the PE Wall.
At Chinook, we have some pretty nice board scooters. Students will participate in self-exploration and various group activities involving our scooters (e.g. Fruit Loop Cleanup, Scooter Tag, etc.).
Last week we started our first fitness assessment for the year (push-ups). This week, we will continue with the pacer, curl-up and sit-and-reach assessments. Families are invited to track student progress on Welnet. Please check the PE Wall for highlights by October 4th.
During the first few weeks of school, our students learn about recess games. We learn how to "Rock, Paper, Scissor" and problem solve on our own while playing at recess. Activities taught include the following:
Switch, 4-square, tetherball, kickball and variations of these games.
